OLD SCHOOL HARD SCIENCE FICTION

The hard science fiction novel Encounter with Tiber is an excellent example of the genre. It is literally packed with interesting science, engineering, and technological explanations.

It is basically two interwoven stories. The human part is in the present and near future (say, 60-70 years) and is concerned with the activities and people involved with the revived human attempts at space exploration and colonization. Two factors spur their efforts on: the privatization of space technology; and the reception of signals from a planet in the planetary system of Alpha Centauri A, part of a binary star system that’s about 4.3 light years (about 25.4 x 1012 miles or 43.0 x 1012 kilometers) away from Earth. The planet of origin of the signals is eventually named Tiber and its inhabitants become known as Tiberians.

The alien or Tiberian part of the book describes the extraterrestrials’ history, culture, biology & physiology, and political institutions in some detail. Because their planet is about to be rendered uninhabitable within a couple of centuries, they have been sending out robot probes to nearby star systems in a search for a suitable planet or planets to which they can migrate. Such a probe has previously examined Earth, and the transmitted data is so promising that a “manned” expedition is sent to reconnoiter the planet in person.

These two parts are woven together by a historian who is on the human starship that’s traveling to the Tiberians’ home system in the late 21st Century.

One character in particular, whom I guess was supposed to be a sympathetic character, was the astronaut and astronomer Chris Terence. Initially, he seems to be a highly competent astronaut and a sympathetic character. However, he proves himself to be supremely arrogant; he apparently thinks that the taxpayers should be happy to spend billions of dollars (with no expectation of any return whatsoever) solely so that scientists like him can "do science" and discover "what matters." In a later part of the book, Chris Terence proclaims that, in the 19th Century, the entire American West from Texas to Washington (state), should have been left "unspoiled," a fertile playground for anthropologists, geologists, and naturalists. Such an elitist hostility toward development turned me profoundly against him. But, hey, that's just my opinion. There is one scary possibility, however. Could Terence's elitist "pure science" attitude be NASA's official position today? That certainly would explain their less than stellar performance, over the last forty years, in advancing real (manned) space exploration, industrialization, and development.

I thought that it was quite astute of the authors to have the Tiberians’ actions on Earth serve as the seeds of various religious myths that would eventually be passed down through the millennia by humans. This was not done explicitly, but it was easy to pick out certain scenes (the runaway lander, the pillar of fire, the flood, the burning bush, the hovering lander(s), and the Tiberians’ weapons) and imagine how the orally transmitted accounts of these events could have been distorted and embellished over time.

I've noticed that, in about 20% of the reviews of Encounter with Tiber, readers are complaining about the science, engineering, and technology that are liberally scattered throughout the book. Well, HELLO...! That's why it's called SCIENCE fiction.

Even without having read Ferrante’s oeuvre, a reader will thrill to learn in more depth of certain themes that haunt her.

I devoured the first three installments of Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan series in early 2015, soon after the publication of the third book’s English translation, and awaited the last with baited breath. Like many, I was swept up in the passion described in and elicited by the series --- a story in four parts that follows the lives of two friends from girlhood to late middle age. The enthusiasm surrounding the books stemmed from disparate sources: some admired Ferrante’s intensely affecting and insightful account of women’s interior lives and friendships, others were drawn to the vivacious energy spilling off each page, while others were more captivated by the mystery surrounding the author’s identity.

Although she still has not disclosed her real name, the author reveals as much of herself as we are likely to ever know in FRANTUMAGLIA, a collection of letters and interviews done over nearly 15 years. With her signature verve, Ferrante discusses the cotton wool of an author’s life: her writing habits, habitual struggles as a writer, mother and woman, how stories develop over time. The letters also include guidance to directors undertaking her books’ transformations into movies, conversations with publishers and editors about current and future work, and relevant unpublished snippets.

Even without having read the entirety of Ferrante’s oeuvre, a reader will thrill to learn in more depth of certain themes that haunt her. The close observation of the way material comes together to form clothing, its transformation from a piece of lifeless cloth to something that speaks volumes. The relationship between dear friends who vacillate between crushing and supporting one another. The deep ambivalence of a woman losing her individual identity to motherhood and the realization to which a daughter comes as she crosses the same bridge.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, many variations of the same questions come up again and again regarding Ferrante as a female and feminist author and her stance on maintaining personal distance from her work. Both subjects are intensely personal for Ferrante the writer, and one must assume for whoever she is off the page as well. She decries the difficulty female authors have breaking from the modifier, eloquently describing how the media and literary world compare women only to each other, denying them their rightful places within the greater canon. Her thoughts on the decision to maintain a separate identity as a writer indicate an unusual and easy-to-admire perspective: that of a person who believes that what the reader needs to know about an author is already present in her work. If anything, her staunchness in this belief suggests that she has taken care to imbue her books with the power to stand on their own. From personal experience, I believe this to be true.

FRANTUMAGLIA comes at a particularly interesting time for English-speaking audiences. Elena Ferrante has served as the author’s pen name for decades in Italy, and her refusal to be unveiled continued even after she achieved international renown. Recently, a sleuthing journalist pinpointed the Italian woman who is most likely Ferrante. An uproar around the author’s privacy and frequently expressed intentions ensued, with most readers reacting with disgust and anger to her outing and refusing to acknowledge or change their relationship with the incognito author. FRANTUMAGLIA indicates that the author would surely gracefully accept the display of fierce loyalty on the part of her readers, but that she is someone who can defend herself. The pen, as they say…

A Fundamental Study of Nomadic Pastoralism in Inner Mongolia

In the pre-revolutionary Mongolian pastoral economy, the basic unit of production was the hoton, or hot ail. Drawing on work conducted by the Russian Mongolist A.D. Simukov in Mongolia in the 1930s, Sneath argues that the hoton is a fluid residential grouping of households, sometimes linked by kinship, and sometimes characterized by a patron-client relationship between rich households, who needed supplement labor to manager their herds, and poor households, who were remunerated with milk and wool in exchange for their services (39-41). It would seem that the hoton is a reflection of pre-existing social stratification. But how did inequality develop among the nomadic pastoralists of Inner Mongolia and elsewhere? Sneath’s field work, conducted in the late 1980s, puts him in a unique perspective to observe the development of material inequality. In the early 1980s, the People’s Communes, which had served as a kind of political and economic administrative apparatus, were disbanded and livestock and pasture were distributed to individual families. Sneath argues that several factors are responsible for the inequality that subsequently developed: herding is fundamentally uncertain, and some families experience significant losses while others are successful; individuals who are ables to influence political authorities obtain preferential access to pasture land; rich families, with too many animals for their supply of domestic labor to handle, will seek the assistance of poor families, who have too few animals for subsistence; this pattern of inequality will tend to subsist, as rich herders lease their herds out to poor families, they are unlikely be substantially affected by loss; poor families will consume a larger percentage of their herds for subsistence, making the accumulation of wealth more difficult (259).

An engaging discussion of golf and its role in American culture

George Kirsch's book, Golf in America, deftly combines a history of the sport and its role as a reflection of American cultural changes. The inviting style, the obvious depth of the author's knowledge, and the fine use of appropriate anecdotes makes this book a great read, and a thought-provoking one as well.
I'm so pleased that I came across this book, and I would recommend it for golfers as well as for those just curious about the evolution of the sport.

GOLF in AMERICA

Something about this book helps envision what many early immigrants wanted for the golfing community. The visionaries wanted to create escape for men where they can escape the real world and rather enjoy time with their families. But the book also brings up that country clubs were exclusive for the Mere elite Social class, and Honestly if you look at many country clubs today this focus is rather still intact. Even though, golf became a very a popular sport for woman in 1990's the rules have not changed for some CC's. If we look at Butler CC in Oakbrook, IL we can still see that women are not allowed even on the grounds expect on terms of picking up their husband from the course. The courses started off in the Mid-Atlantic region (New york) and started pushing towards the west, this would include Chicago. Where many of the clubs that were first built, to now where hundreds and hundreds lay across the United States today.
The book also analyzes the effects on the economy, society and the effect it had on the world.
This book is a great secondary source, I'm doing my senior thesis on: Cog Hill Golf and CC and Its Never Ending Journey of Receiving a PGA Tournament. Where it goes very in-depth with the history of golf in America. The book also speaks about golf in the Chicago land area and it speaks of Frank Jemsek.
If you're a golfer or your a lover of sports, this book is great read.

Finally, A Detailed Guide Book Focused on Paraguay!

I moved to Paraguay less than a year ago. Finding information about the country was an adventure, so my search for a guide book eventually led to a somewhat dead end. I own Lonely Planet South America which has a small chapter about Paraguay. It's better than nothing, but the chapter pales in comparison to chapters written about other countries in South America.

So when I heard about this book, I was excited. It is great, with the most current information about the country. There's detailed information about not just Asuncion, the capital, but about other lesser known places in Paraguay. I particularly like that the book isn't written either from a backpacker's perspective or from a high-end traveler's perspective. It offers an objective view on Paraguay, giving information that would be helpful in any situation.

The author has lived in Paraguay a while now, so the information is reliable. I really couldn't put this book down; I was so excited to finally have a guide book about this country in which I will be living for the next two to three years.

Invaluable resource

Paraguay is often only a footnote in most guide books. This guide is the most comprehensive that I have seen, and I have been visiting Paraguay for over 30 years. It is a must if you want to discover the beauties of a country that has not fully embraced the tourist trade, but has much to offer. In it we discovered wonderful places to visit that were unknown to people living within an hour of the attraction.

Nice, nice, very nice. I moved to Paraguay for 3 years in 1975 and have visited every 18-30 months ever since. I thought I knew the country pretty well. The author provides gems of insight on places and things to do that I found astounding and wondered how I hadn't uncovered some of these same things! Her love of the country comes through in her writing. Buy this book. You will be happy you did!

A Paradigm Shift in Agricultural Thought

You hear so much marketing these days about this is a new paradigm or that is a new paradigm. If you want to understand the definition of what a true paradigm is, then simply read this book. A paradigm is defined as an example serving as a model and that folks is exactly what we have here. . The current "state-of-the-art" in agriculture is defined by big agro-chemical companies dictating what the farmer must use for seed, fertilizer, herbicides, pesticides, etc. The small family farm concept has been dead in America for years. All the runoff from the big farms enters our surface water, groundwater, and oceans laden with harmful chemical that are literally killing every ecosystem on the earth (land, water, ocean, and air). With World population growth rates poised to put us at 10 Billion people by 2050, we simply do not have the amount of arable land available that it will take to feed this super population. At least not with current agricultural methods. Here enters Despommier and his troop of Grad students to show us how to think outside the box concerning an issue that will effect every one of us 7+ billion beings before we leave this Earth for parts unknown. That is having enough quality food to eat. It's hard for us Americans to sit down on our computers in our world of overabundance and contemplate that millions of kids die yearly from starvation. We think that only happens "over there, wherever there is". The truth is that it happens at home too, and in the relatively near future here is likely to become over there if we don't step up to prevent it. As our world gradually warms to levels humankind has not ever seen we will be dealing with climate changes that will rip apart our status quo agricultural systems. Imagine as our coastal cities become flooded that there is water everywhere but none fit to drink. What was until recently considered severe weather will become the norm, and new extremes will develop. If we could only slam on the breaks now and move backwards with respect to how we treat out Earth we might be able to salvage some of it. But we just keep humming along abusing our natural resources without a second thought. But wait, here is a glimmer of hope. A light at the end of the tunnel so to speak. By completely modifying how we produce our food and redefining how we use our resources to farm, we can accomplish an about face. If we can simply get the ball rolling it will snowball all by itself. I won't event try to explain how a Vertical Farm works or why it is such an amazing concept because the book does this so eloquently that my words wouldn't compare. Please just read it and think how the world would change for your kids and grand kids if we took the time and effort to make this happen. Good luck and I will see you on Level 4 of the first vertical farm (that one will be mine).

Inspiring!

Two and a half years ago I was looking across the street and saw a Safeway supermarket with an empty roof. I thought to myself, why don't we put farms on top of buildings so that we have more local food?

Last month, I finally got to finishing Dr. Despommier's The Vertical Farm. As someone who is passionate about finding innovative solutions to environmental problems, I found this book inspiring.

First, Dr. D takes introduces some of the most important issues related to our unsustainable agriculture system. This is great for readers who might not be sustainability experts. If you are such an expert, this will be a good refresher of sustainable agriculture. The rest of the book explores the vertical farm as a concept and what role it might play in the future sustainable city. It has images of concept farms, the main systems involved, and the basics of soil-less growing techniques.

A lot of the reviews on here are critical of the author's visionary thinking and criticize the book for using "could", "would" and "should" too much.

We won't get very far in making our societies sustainable without imagining solutions for the future as this book does. Our best ideas came from imagining what might be possible.

The Vertical Farm is a great read for those looking to be inspired by a sustainable vision of future cities.

Interesting tidbits of information and step by step build up of case for vertical farms. Short on detail however, if you want to build one. Book is Appropriate for city planners and social scientists. Took one star out as some gardening content on what would be needed to make hydroponics and aquaponics feasible in such vertical farms would have been worthwhile.
