Eye Opener

Many "Really?!" moments packed in this slender (just under 40 oversized pages) but informative book.
From optics to bananas, bowing stringed instruments to using notation for zero, Islamic civilization got there first, it seems.
Barnard's orientation is historical and scientific -- religious issues aren't his subject -- so it will be interesting to see if this book is nevertheless swept up into the politics of our clash-of-civilizations moment merely for its title.
Handsome painted illustrations throughout. It's well written, with many eye-opening revelations.

Excellent intro to history of Islamic civilization

If you want a concise, very well-researched intro into the history of Islamic civilization and culture, this is a great choice. Nice illustrations, just the right amount of text, and more references in the back. It's a great anti-dote to the kind of thinking that is on display in the review written by another Amazon reviewer. Barnard shows where the influences from other civilizations came from, and where the originality from Islamic civilization made it's mark. Highly recommended.

A Very good book for young people!

This is a very well written book about some of the advancements the world has seen that were the direct result of invention or inspiration of Muslims. A good book for you people which will give a larger view of Islam.
