A satisfying conclusion to the Restoration Series
By Christian Fiction Addiction
"The Legacy" offers up a moving, emotionally satisfying conclusion to "The Restoration Series". I enjoyed how the authors have, in a way, modernized the story of the prodigal son, as Doug makes a series of choices that lead him away from the faith of his youth to embrace what the world has to offer. As with earlier books in the series, the characters continue to be written with a real depth to them, and I liked the fact that the authors aren't afraid to portray people with very human problems, even those who have grown over the course of the series. For example, despite his best intentions, Doug's father Jim reacts to Doug's choices in a way that only serves to drive a wedge between them. Although Jim has come a long way from the days of the first book in the series (the Dance), he still has things to learn, something any of us can relate to. Parents will also be able to relate to the struggles that the Andersons have in knowing how to parent Doug through his challenges, knowing when to step in and when to let go.

But what I most love about this series is the way it portrays the gift that a healthy family is, whether in times of blessings or hard times. So often we can turn on the news or look in the neighbourhood around us and feel like all we are seeing is marriages falling apart, child-parent conflict resulting in estrangement, and the breakdown of the family. This book and the whole series offer us a hope that things can be different. And though the authors definitely want you to learn something through the reading of this book, you don't need to be afraid that you'll be bored. There is plenty of drama to keep you glued to the pages. I know I was!

Walsh and Smalley have not only offered up a solidly entertaining book with "The Legacy", but have penned an entire series that will please fans and inspire them readers to make changes in their own lives. I give this book a solid rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

A great continuation of a wonderful series
By Book Reader
I always like it when two of my top authors join forces to write an unforgettable novel. I was sold on Gary Smalley's writing in fiction when he joined forces with Karen Kingsbury. Dan Walsh has been a favorite from his first book I've read by him a few years ago. The Restoration Series that Walsh and Smalley have written is a collection of unforgettable stories. They each deal with real life issues and tough issues. Some issues are marriage issues, all are relationship issues in one way or another, and all issues have lead to restoration within those relationships. However, they each did have a cost to pay for their choices.

Book 4 continues to follow the Anderson family. Jim Anderson is still restoring the problems that his children have faced because of his choices as a father in the previous years. However, since he has begun to change, he is seeking to reach out to each one in his family and restore those relationships. This book focuses on his son, Doug.

Doug has made decisions that many today make. He's living a double life and has to hit rock bottom in order for his life to turn around. It's painful for his family to watch, but he doesn't want to listen to anyone. Even his friendship with Christina has stalled.

I like this series for another reason: because I always learn something new about interacting with my children. In this book, I learned how treating your child like the prodigal son looks like. It's not easy and I can imagine my heart would be broken. However, I also saw how it can also give them room to be reached by God. It leads to a relationship where the child knows their parent loves them and is a safe place, even if they don't agree with the decisions.

I sincerely hope that there are more stories in this series. This has become like the Baxter series by Karen Kingsbury. I don't want to say goodbye to the Anderson family!

A great final chapter to a series I loved!
By J. Cole
I'm so excited to share the conclusion to the Restoration Series by Dan Walsh and Gary Smalley. The Legacy is book #4 in this series and it was as good as the first three. Honestly, I am not sure which would be my favorite, because I loved each one of these stories!TheLegacy-194x300

First, check our my review of The Dance, The Promise and The Desire - so you will see the great depth of characters in this series as well as the variety of topics faced. The Anderson family makes up the main cast of characters with Jim and Marilyn as the parents, and Tom, Michelle and Doug their children. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading each story as it dives in to a different member of the Anderson family and looks at topics ranging from adoption, divorce, and job loss.

The Legacy is focused on the youngest son in the Anderson Family, Doug. While he is at college he is making choices that do not line up with his family values, and while his parents suspect something is up they are reluctant to jump in. After a confrontation that is undeniable, tough decisions need to be made.

I appreciated the tough topics faced in this story because I have 2 boys about to start high school, the season Doug is in is just around the corner for me. I love seeing the counseling techniques that Gary Smalley would use with family counseling playing out in a novel with characters I can relate to.

I cannot recommend these stories enough, they are captivating and quick reads, but with tremendous depth, truth and practical application. No matter where you are in life, or what you are dealing with, these stories will offer great insight into choosing a path that honors the Lord.

NOTE : I received The Legacy in exchange for an honest review by Revell Publishers.
