In this stunning sequel to the highly acclaimed Daughter of Smoke & Bone, Karou must decide how far she'll go to avenge her people. Filled with heartbreak and beauty, secrets and impossible choices, Days of Blood & Starlight finds Karou and Akiva on opposing sides as an age-old war stirs back to life.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, November 2012: Never fear, fans of Daughter of Smoke & Bone--Days of Blood & Starlight is just as good, if not better. Picking up a few months after the end of Daughter, Laini Taylor’s epic sequel finds Karou in the middle of the desert, tormented by memories of Akiva and creating an army to avenge her people. The drama runs high as the war between the angels and the chimera begins to take on a life of its own, and Karou begins to understand that her actions may have dire consequences. Taylor’s writing is full of energy and imagination, creating a world so vivid, you’ll swear you’ve been there, and characters you feel you know as well as your friends. The last third of the book demands your full attention, leaving no time to breathe between sentences and ending on a cliffhanger so big, you’ll wonder how on earth you can wait for the third installment. --Caley Anderson

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-Rebellion foments in secret places in this complex sequel to Daughter of Smoke and Bone (Little, Brown, 2011). The battle between chimaera and seraphim moves from one world to another as estranged, star-crossed lovers Karou and Akiva struggle to stem the rising tide of annihilation embraced by their respective leaders. While Karou attempts to resurrect the chimaera army in a remote Moroccan kasbah, in a parallel world Akiva desperately seeks to atone for his past by warning civilians fleeing the advancing seraphs. Occasionally overwrought language is leavened by humor supplied by Karou's human friends, Zusana and Mik, who arrive at the kasbah and make unlikely places for themselves among the resurrected chimaera. The dream of peace cherished lives ago by Karou and Akiva achieves a shaky foothold when chimaera soldiers and seraph rebels reluctantly unite to battle the greater evil: Jael, the psychopathic new emperor of the angels, who is poised to invade the human world in his search for powerful weapons. Assassinations, betrayals, and revelations drive the plot through decoratively ornate prose that sometimes slows the pace, but deepening characterizations anchor the action, and the emotional and political stakes are higher. Multiple worlds teeter on the edge of apocalypse, unaware that a curious magic is reaching out from past exile to affect the present. The rising tension of the coming battle overtakes the unexceptional unrequited love story to make this a suspenseful, satisfying sequel.-Janice M. From Booklist
In this sequel to her much-lauded Daughter of Smoke and Bone (2011), Taylor continues the saga of Karou and Akiva. Karou’s chimaera “family,” Brimstone and Issa, are dead; Akiva, her former angel lover, is now her bitter enemy; and Thiago, the evil white wolf, has secreted her away to a desert Kasbah. There she has assumed Brimstone’s role of creator of new chimaera from the souls of the dead so that Thiago can continue his war against the seraphim. It’s a bitter, violent story full of unrequited love, loneliness, and cruel, pointless war. Readers will be delighted at the reemergence of Zuzana and Mik, as they solve the riddle that enables them to track Karou to the Kasbah. Their presence—their humanness—lightens the plot, allowing a thin ray of hope to permeate this otherwise dark and brutal story. Because of its complexity, the series is best read sequentially to prepare for the promised third book, in which Karou, Akiva, and their tribes face the apocalypse. Grades 8-12. --Frances Bradburn

Holy crap. So many twists and turns
By Amazon Customer
Holy crap. So many twists and turns. My head is spinning!! Absolutely phenomenal!

Seeing as this is the second book in a series, I'll keep this review short as to not spoil anything. Because trust me, you don't want me to spoil a single, gosh-darn thing. This book was absolutely amazing. I did get a little frustrated with Karou towards the end, but it didn't last long.

As for Akiva, he has a heart of gold... Can I just say that again? Heart. Of. Gold. He wants to do the best thing always, but he also listens to his heart. To what it calls for. To his brother and sister. To his kind. To his love.

Karou, too, tries to listen to do the right thing, but she feels her heart has betrayed her in her past life and her present. She wanted what she shouldn't, so she fights against her heart. She tries to redirect. It's saddening and maddening, but it's also so relatable. I mean, wouldn't I do the same thing given her situation?

The struggle is real.

After all the books I have read, I can honestly say that there is nothing quite like this series. If you haven't already, mark this series on your TBR list. You won't regret it!!

A must read
By Amy Slager
I read this series a couple of years ago and fell in love with it. So much! I will now read anything that Laini writes, sight unseen.

This week was finally time for my audiobook re-read and I am loving it. I finished DOSAB a couple days ago and started right into book 2. Now I'm up late, having had to stay up just to finish it so I can move on to Monsters tomorrow. I have to say again that the narrator, Khristine Hvam is a brilliant reader, with all her accents and voices. She really brings Laini's books to life, so much so that I found myself laughing out loud, or talking back to her/Karou several times. This is a must read for any fantasy lover, and I highly recommend the audiobooks.

Love all the POVs
By darswords
Normally, when I get a book that has no text-to-speech and isn't lendable I give it fewer stars in the rating. But since I love this series so much that I would give it more than five stars for each book, you can only go down to the limit of five from above. Dar rationalization. I'm sticking to it! Besides, without the narration of Khristine Hvam, I think, this book would just be average. Who am I kidding? I think it would still be fantastic. Khristine Hvam is just the icing on the cake--but isn't that the best part?

Book two starts off immediately where book one left off. Good think I reread book one to understand that. The adventure continues with all the same players and a few new ones. I love that there are more points of view introduced in this book. Zuzana now has her own part to play as does her boyfriend, Mik. Their thoughts and histories add humor and wonder to a crazy world that Karou and Akiva already knew and showed us in book one. I love Zuzana so much. I love her sense of humor and excitement. I may love her more than the main character, Karou. But Mik is adorable, too. They add a lot to the story.

I want to write more, but book three is calling so loudly that I can't think of anything else to say. Please, give this series a chance, preferably with the narration. I think you may love it as much as I do. Now let me go bury myself in the next book. Bye!
