Anthony Sequeira (CCIE No. 15626) began his IT career in 1994 with IBM in Tampa, Florida. He quickly formed his own computer consultancy, Computer Solutions, and then discovered his true passion–teaching and writing about Microsoft and Cisco technologies. Anthony has lectured to massive audiences around the world while working for Mastering Computers. Anthony has never been happier in his career than he is now as a full-time trainer for CBT Nuggets. He is an avid tennis player, a private pilot, a semi-professional poker player, and enjoys getting beaten up by women and children at the martial arts school he attends with his daughter.

Great Secondary Resource

Over all, this is a great review for the ICND1. It does assume you have a significant amount of knowledge on the ICND1 topics, so I recommend using this book as at least a secondary source just before taking the exam. Anthony Sequeira and Keith Barker are some of the best trainers out there and did a great job focusing on the right topics. The Cramsheet and practice exams were also great resources.

This book, combined with the OCG, the CBTNuggets ICND1 videos, and many hours in my own hardware lab made passing this exam a breeze.

About the Author

Kelly Washbourne is an Associate Professor of Translation in the Institute for Applied Linguistics at Kent State University, and teaches pragmatic translation courses at the bachelors, masters, and doctoral levels. He earned his MA in Translation at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, and his PhD in Hispanic Literature and Linguistics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His works include the book translations Literary Memoirs by Jos� Victorino Lastarria (Oxford's Library of Latin America, 2000), Incomplete Democracy by Manuel Garret�n (with Gregory Horvath; University of North Carolina Press, Latin America in Translation / En Traducci�n / Em Tradu��o, 2003); After-Dinner Conversation, a critical translation and introduction of De sobremesa, the 1896 novel by Jos� Asunci�n Silva (University of Texas Press's Pan-American Literature in Translation series, 2005); and An Anthology of Spanish American Modernismo, in English Translation with Spanish Text (edited; translated with Sergio Waisman, MLA Texts and Translations series, 2007). He most recently completed an English-language edition of Nobel Prize-winning writer Miguel Angel Asturias’s Leyendas de Guatemala. Disorganized, with some useful tidbits

I was slightly dissatisfied with this book. I am using it for an independent study, and unfortunately the book is ill suited to this sort of task. There is little direct information and a lot of activities. Without an instructor to guide the student through the many activities and discussion points the book loses much of its value as an educational tool. Also, the tone is rather stuffy and almost preachy at times. To its credit, I did learn some useful tips and gained valuable information from the book. I would have no qualms using the book as a textbook in a traditional classroom setting, but as an individual study book it is probably not the best choice.

A real stinker...

This textbook is rather lousy. First of all, I'm not a fan of bolded terms when no glossary of definitions are located in the back - or even adjacent the bolded terms themselves! I shouldn't need to find these definitions in another source. Secondly, there are WAY TOO MANY activities in this book, and most of them are poorly conceived and pointless filler. Too many somewhat rhetorical questions litter each chapter and in the activities themselves, along with a number of typos. I shouldn't have to introspect about translation four times per page- just teach me already! The overall structure and content of the book are very schizophrenic, as if every paragraph is taking the reader / learner in a new direction without purpose or even the customary transition one would find in, say, every other text book out there. I'm using this text in a classroom environment, and if it weren't for an excellent professor I'd be totally lost. Lastly, this is a graduate-level book, so expect to have had at least one undergrad course in translation to grasp this well. If not then you'll probably be alright, but expect to take more time digesting it or referencing supplemental texts as an aid. Some good stuff in here, but even more garbage, and all of it could be presented in a much more concise and organized manner.

Continued learning after the class

I used this book for a graduate-level course and greatly benefited from its lessons. It has been over two years since I used this book in a classroom setting, and I still find valuable information in it.

The book's activities are widely varied; some make for good discussions while others require fairly in-depth research. As a result, this book is great for both classroom and individual use.

While there are many valuable "tidbits," it is important to note that this book is not designed to sit on a coffee table. Many of its activities are designed to challenge the reader to think critically and perform research to find the answers. These are necessary skills that a translator must possess.

Anyone looking to become a translator overnight should not use this book. It might even be wise to change professions. Constructed translation is a complex skill that takes years of dedication and study, and this book serves as a wonderful introduction to its many facets.

IBEX MAGIC HARDSHIP (and a) YOUNG GIRL

Through the magic and mystical character Blue Sky we see the journey most of us take. Who am I? Where do I belong? This is a fabulous story of an infant raised by a pair of outcast ibex in one of nature's harshest places on earth. We watch Sky go from the innocence of childhood to a young woman. She is haunted and guided by dreams while meeting the challenges of the brutal side of Mother Nature. Love and guidance by the ibex and her mystical mother move Sky forward to finding answers to those questions and more....Is it true you don't exist until someone believes in you?
The opportunities for discussion among parents and friends as to the importance on one's place in life are endless. I highly recommend this book. Brian Kindall's skill at bringing Blue Sky to life is so vivid and in such an action packed fashion that this book is a page turner. I could easily envision this as an animated fillm as well as a book to be found in the hands of kids (young adults) everywhere.

Idaho author Brian Kindall has gained his love for adventure which he translates into his novels as a as whitewater raft guide, a packer for a backcountry hunting camp, hiking and skiing in the mountains of Central Idaho. He also, refreshingly, believes in magic - that sort of magic that lies within nature. All of this blends into the skill of an alchemist in his to date two published books, PEARL and BLUE SKY.

In BLUE SKY Brian manages create a story that is without limits to the reader's age - young readers will gain as much from his exquisite story as adult readers. Some how he distills nature and man's relationship to nature in a way that is novel, credible, imbued with magic and fantasy but remaining at all times an example of the zenith that belongs to nature, especially in the rarefied air of the high mountains. `The mountains, after all, are a mysterious world peopled with spirits and whispering legends' he states and it is into this setting that we step across his threshold for this story.

The character central to the book is Old Stone, an Ibex, and to assure that the reader is familiar with this species of animal the following is offered: The Alpine ibex is a species of wild goat that lives in the mountains of the European Alps. It is a sexually dimorphic species with larger males who carry larger, curved horns. Ibex tend to live in steep, rough terrain above the snow line. They are also social, although adult males and females segregate for most of the year, coming together only to mate.

Brian opens his story with Old Stone, the ibex, observing a human attempting to climb a heretofore impossibly difficult mountain. Knowing that humans have never navigated that terrain Old Stone is not surprised when the human loses purchase on the rock and falls to the snow below. `But then the man made a gesture that caused Old Stone to take notice. Gently, almost like a prayer, he placed both hands, palms flat, against the rock. And then he bowed his head. Old Stone leaned forward, unsure of what he was seeing. It seemed that maybe - Could it be possible? - the man was listening to the voice of the mountains. He was hearing the music. Old Stone had never thought humans capable of anything but silliness. They were always yodeling and hopping around on the rocks like a bunch of clumsy, two-legged rabbits. They certainly didn't seem to belong in the high mountains. But this fellow here, he was different somehow. Old Stone felt that it was true. This solitary man seemed to be a natural part of the alpine world. He seemed akin to the noble ibex. Old Stone couldn't help himself; he suddenly liked this man.' But when Old stone investigates the fallen alpinist he encounters a woman offering succor, and even more an infant that Old Stone `adopts' when the woman disappears. And thus we have the beginning of Blue Sky.

The synopsis offers a fleeting glimpse at the story to come: Like any normal girl, Blue Sky just wants to fit in. But it's all the not-so-normal stuff that's causing her problems. I have a young friend, Maddie, who I believe will be the ideal reader of Brian Kindall's BLUE SKY. Maddie is eight or nine, going on thirty, and she loves getting lost in books. I picture her sprawled on her bed--it's cold outside, the sun's coming in--and she's just, well, gone. She's high in the mountains with Blue Sky and her ibex friends, human but not really, not yet. Maddie will not put this book down until every word's read and relished. Kindall knows how people Maddie's age think, and what captures them. About the Author
Cao Xueqin (1715-63) was born into a family which for three generations held the office of Commissioner of Imperial Textiles in Nanking, a family so wealthy they were able to entertain the Emperor four times. However, calamity overtook them and their property was consfiscated. Cao Xueqin was living in poverty when he wrote his famous novel The Story of the Stone.

Good Attempt on Translating difficult Chinese

I have just finished reading the Chinese Version of the story (which I would rate as 5 stars), and thought, although the English Version is pretty accurate, it somehow lacks the fluency the story should have. Because of the difficulty for foreign people to imagine the situation, readers are not involved in the story as much and is therefore less effective than some books like the Wild Swan. The translation has definitely lost some tastes from the Chinese version. However if you are a foreigner who wants to explore Chinese culture, or a person who does not understand written Chinese very well (like me), this is still the book to read,for this is a book that can endure repeated reading such that one can inevitably find more and more traces of Cao Xueqin's ingenuity.

Warning voices to presage the decadence of the Jia

Volume 3 finds the significant idea in Buddhist that one would open his eyes to the vanity of human affections and causes a person to renounce the world, for one no longer subscribes to the conventions of the mundane, dust-stained world and thrives to be detached from it.

The title of this gripping, escalating volume, The Warning Voice, duly confirms the intractable decadence of the Jias. Tolstoy's opening line in Anna Karenina best describes the unfavorable miasma - "All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." Outsiders look at the Jias and all its wealth and immediately think how happy the Jias must be, they don't realize the vexations far outweigh the advantages and privileges. Being a big family with its numerous maids' converting to mistresses and concubines, daily fuss and drama are inevitable. These mistresses are conceited, usually full of their own importance, and always take offense at the most trivial matter, and at the slightest bit of cross do they begin to spread rumors to stir up trouble. It is under such quarrelsome milieu that the Jias gradually wanes. Volume 3 begins with the domestic hierarchy of maids in the house and how in the sabbatical of Xi-feng from managing house duties the well being of the family is left at the mercy of the senior maids.

In the event of an imperial member's death, the Jia ladyships take to daily excursion to the palace where they attend ceremonies during the mourning period (usually spans 100 days during Ming and Qing dynasties). Their stewards and stewardesses are no less occupied with accompanying them and seeing that preparations are readied ahead of time. Lacking discipline normally imposed by these officers and being deprived of Xi-feng's invidiously stringent implementation of rules on the operation of the house, domestics of both mansions (Rong and Ning) grow slovenly in the duties. Some of the most memorable scenes of THE DREAM OF THE RED CHAMBER are indubitably those that concern Jia Lian's secret second marriage and its aftermath. The cunning Xi-feng deliberately conceals her knowledge of the shameful matter and executes her plan silently. Keeping her anger at bay and taking advantage of her rival's lacking in guile, Xi-feng entreats her rival to live with her, feigns kindness and makes her rival feel reassured about her future in the bosom of so delightful a family. Xi-feng's forbearance and outward gesture of kindness greatly mystify everyone who knows about the matter but little does anyone know about her true intent to rid of this new mistress. The treacherous Xi-feng surreptitiously draws up a fictitious court case accusing her own husband of taking an unlawful wife during national mourning and family mourning in order to rid of her rival indirectly. Her strategy is to stir up a betrothal agreement concerning her rival in the old days and manipulates the formerly affianced to bring a written indictment against her own husband before the court.

Insubordination and deterioration of moral standard infest the garden and infuriate Lady Wang. In her opinion each one of the maids in the garden is potential corrupter of her son Bao-yu. She orders a raid of the garden at the awestruck finding of a lewd picture. Secret investigation on the obscene brick-a-brac immediately takes place with such single-minded persistence and orders all maids to be subjected to her scrutiny. This volume faintly presages Bao-yu's determination to grip his own destiny. He thrives to live his life as he wants to and recognizes life'' uncertainty. This is significant in his defiance over the family-decided marriage to Bao-chai and his firm refusal to let go of his feeling and affection for Lin Dai-yu. It can be inferred that in his ineffable pain of losing Dai-yu that he has conceived the incipient thought to break away from the dust-stained world. Buddhist teaching dictates the second half of this climax-reaching volume of the novel. At the depletion of wealth and the dimming of glitter the truth of Buddha outshines the taste of luxury that is proven to be vanity at best. Out of the sea of suffering, one might turn the light and resolve to abjure the world and its vanities in order to prepare for the life to come. This idea burgeons toward the end of The Warning Voice as a sign and will be further explored in Volume 4.

This is wonderful Chinese Literarure

I have now read all three volumes of the David Hawkes' translation of 'The Dream of the Red Chamber' and I am simply blown away by the sheer volume of the text, and how there is never a dull moment. Not only is it a beautiful love story, but it is also a semi autobiographical account of the rise and fall of Cao Wue-Qin's family. I love modern Chinese writers like Mo Yan and Yu Hua, but I must say this novel is a must read for anyone wishing to understand Chinese Literature. My wife is Chinese and she knows this work from her days in school, and she said that it must have been very hard to translate the old Chinese into Modern English, but I would say that Mr. Hawkes' version is true and as close as one can get to an excellent translation of an enormous tome. I would just stick to these 3 volumes with the 80 chapters - and enjoy. This is truly a great piece of world literature that should be read.

"Kevin's Birthday Turtle" is another case in point. Sally bring the magical world of the sea and all its creatures to life in this story of a young boy and his sea turtle. As the boy learns, all creatures must be treated with care and compassion. Another important message for children taught in a perfectly charming way!

Good Story, Good Message

This book will set a child’s imagination going by following the little hero of this story as he travels beneath the sea. But it will also plant the seed of compassion for another, in this case, his turtle. I think this is a wonderful story that demonstrates how important a promise is. The idea here can be applied to any child’s caring of his own pet or even of himself. The many illustrations are charming, colorful, and move along beautifully with the rhythm of the story. Highly recommended.

This is just the cutest story. A perfect under the sea adventure with a wonderful moral to the story. The illustrations are brilliant and the story is very well told. In this fun story your children will learn that pets need care, love and appreciation while your children are being thoroughly entertained as they're learning. Nice. Both my 2 yr. old and my 6 year old loved it! Absolutely recommended!

In this volume, contributors offer rich ethnographic analyses of religious practices in the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Burma that examine the roles materiality plays in the religious lives of Southeast Asians. These essays demonstrate that religious materials are embedded in a host of practices that enable the faithful to negotiate the often tumultuous experience of living amid other believers. What we see is that the call for plurality, often initiated by government, increases the importance of religious objects, as they are the means by which the distinctiveness of a particular faith is “fenced” in a field of competing religious discourses. This project is called “the spirit of things” to evoke both the “aura” of religious objects and the power of material things to manifest “that which is fundamental” about faith and belief.

Innovative new study on Samkhya-Yoga metaphysics

This is an excellent book on (primarily) Samkhya metaphysics, and the most innovative treatment of the subject since G. Larson "Classical Samkhya". The author resolves the long standing apparent tension between cosmological-cum-psychological interpretations of Samkhya's tattva-theory by offering a new synchronic and phenomenological interpretation of the tattvas as the necessary conditions for experience to occur. Moreover, the study makes a compelling argument against a realist reading of prakrti. This book is a most welcome contribution to the field.

The Rejection of Realism

"...I hope enough has been done to demonstrate the extreme unlikelihood that Samkhya and Yoga are responsible for the sorts of crude cosmological speculations that have been avidly attributed to them by several generations of putative exegetes. What they are instead responsible for, I have proposed, is among other things an elaborate and insightful system of interrelated principles that is best construed as an Indian metaphysics of experience." (162)

These concluding lines of Burley's "Classical Samkhya and Yoga" summarize what he hopes to have accomplished, and it seems that he has done so quite convincingly. One of the original features of his book is the way it deals with the problem of the fundamental categories of prak'ti, or the tattvas, having being historically understood as having both a cosmogonic and psychological designation. On the one hand they seem to be presented as an account of how the universe "unfolds" in a temporal and causal sequence in which some fundamental matter (prakriti) is transformed into the constituent elements of the universe. On the other they are presented as an account of how phenomenological human experience arises. However, this dual nature or bivalence is never mentioned or even suggested in the texts (Samkhyakarika & Yogasutras) themselves. Burley confronts this issue by asking two simple questions, 1.) How does the physical arise from the psychological? 2.) How can aspects of psychology emerge sequentially, when all are present at any given time?

The problem can be resolved, argues Burley, if we abandon a realistic and diachronic interpretation in favor of a reading that takes the tattvas as a synchronic analysis of experience. Burley's project is essentially Kantian in nature (Chapter 3), arguing that the metaphysical nature of primordial matter (prakriti) is better understood with respect to Kant's transcendental metaphysics, rather than as a product of direct causality and offers an original account of the elements (bhutas) as the forms that must accompany sensory content rather than as material entities that are themselves transformations of more subtle entities. Or as Burley quips, "My view now is that prakriti is 'matter' only in the sense that it is that which makes up `the matter of experience'." (x)

Burley's primary argument is a rejection of realism, condemning many modern interpretations of Samkhya and Yoga as being too enthusiastically dualist. As Burley himself writes,
"...what we are faced with in Samkhya-Yoga metaphysics is not a mind-world dualism as typically understood in the tradition stemming from Descartes, but something which, though hard to pin down exactly, can provisionally be termed a subject-experience dualism (where 'experience' is construed as including both acts- or powers to act- and the contents thereof). 'The world' qua subject-independent realm of entities - is not in the picture." (79)
Concerning the realism of matter and prakriti influenced by western conceptions of dualism, the comparison to the mind-body dualism of Kant and Descartes fails as Kant's "I think" and Descartes' "res cogitans" are certainly analogous to Samkhya's tattva of ahamkara, which is, in their own understandings, "phenomenal" and "res extensa," respectively.

Burley argues that from the position of Samkhya-Yoga, the entire issue of realism simply cannot be addressed, the very posing of the question simply being inappropriate to the purview of phenomenology. That is, regardless of whether or not a physical world exists independent of purusha is entirely irrelevant to the soteriological aim of Samkhya-Yoga. Burley's point is that Samkhya-Yoga does not profess to be a "grand unified theory," so to speak, that can account for all other standpoints. It simply attempts to account for how things appear when one follows the prescribed methods of Yogic practice. Reading into Samkhya and interjecting the realism suggested in the nyaya and vaisheshika darshanas is simply an error.

As a whole, Burley's book is excellent. It is carefully researched, well argued, and perhaps the most impressive, Burley attempts to stay entirely within the bounds of the text (other than obvious Kantian reading). This deliberate framing makes a very poignant addition to the greater conversation on Samkhya-Yoga, while presenting his argument in such a way that will allow others to pursue like-minded projects that build upon this work. In addition to the novel insights within, the book is also general and inclusive enough to be read as an introductory text for those interested in the field.
