disappointment

i wrote my diploma thesis about interface design and this was the worst book i have read. the authors repeat themself again and again and again. to less info, too much blahblah. for me, this book was nearly useless (and as i live in europe i paid lots of money for it!). sorry, but i'm really upset. btw. the best book i have read was theo mandels elements of user interface design!

Publisher misleads on contents of CD (?) - text is just fine

The authors write a nice, although somewhat expensive alternative to Cooper's "About Face," Howlett's "Visual Interface Design," and Mullet's "Designing Visual Interfaces," etc. However, the contents of the CD do not match the statements made on the cover of the book, nor the text within the book. For example, despite what the publisher states, I found no pdf files on the CD. I suspect that they are shipping different versions (?) of the CD with the same book. I called the publisher, they seem to deny this, or maybe they are oblivious to it. Maybe the CD is nothing special (as another reader, Jarrett, December 15, suggests). Oh well.

Proven, practical techniques covering a broad subject range

As usability consultants, we have used GUI Design Essentials as a reference for many client projects, large and small. We often recommend it as the 'one' book to buy, especially for programmers, users, and others who don't have extensive user interface design experience. We also use it ourselves as a reference and good source of examples. Two important strengths of the book are: 1) it is obviously based on practical experience, the techniques work; and 2) it covers a broad range of subjects. The book covers user interface design methodology (a step-by-step process), usability testing, and standards and guidelines for GUI and Web apps. For very in-depth coverage of any particular topic of interest, you might want to consider books that focus in specific areas, such as The Handbook of Usability Testing by Jeff Rubin, the Windows Interface Guidelines from Microsoft, and Designing Object-Oriented User Interfaces by Collins. The CDROM included is a bonus- we've used it as the basis for several corporate GUI standards projects. Although you will want to extend the topics, why reinvent the wheel on the basics?

A FINE INFORMAL ACCOUNT OF QUANTUM GRAVITY

This math-free book is a good introduction to loop quantum gravity and has a lot of interesting history about the development of physics since (and including) the Greeks.It's an informal introduction to a very difficult and doubtfully intelligible theory.- doubted even by its most ingenious contributors. Tthe reader should expect that he s/he will have to concentrate hard on what Rovelli says but the rewards are significant. He is a talented phys icist and a good writer. If you read it carefully and stop to think about the message as it unfolds then you will get a worthwhile if imperfect picture of what the theory is saying and how it was invented.. It's buried treasure and you will have to do some digging. It is a really serious attempt to do all that can be done in an informal style

Methodical Teaching

Jim Stinnett does a great job on this topic. If you're considering getting serious about your improvisation skills on bass, this book is perfect. I enjoyed every page and this book (along with practice) has elevated my improvisation skills considerably. The book is a little thin, but this is truly all you need (as far as text goes). I bought this along with a Jazz Standards book with CD. The 2 books combined easily replaced any need for face-to-face lessons (I'm a book learner anyway). Wouldn't part with this book as it will be a great reference tool going forward.

Easy and effective way to learn how to play walking bass

This book is a superb and surprisingly quick way to learn how to play walking jazz bass lines. I have played bass-range instruments for 30 years, and technically, I knew how to play walking bass. But for some reason I always sounded less like Ron Carter and more like Chris Squire trying to play jazz. None of the people I played gigs with complained, but they didn't really rave, either. I knew there were things I didn't know, so I tried this book. In a matter of a few days, my walking bass lines got 1,000% better.

I love that this book is not dumbed-down -- he teaches you not just how to get the chord tones right, but how to introduce chromatics, substitutions, etc., that can make you sound a lot more interesting -- and edgy, too, if that's what you're looking for. And he makes it all easy to understand.

That said, this book is not for beginners. You have to know how to read bass clef (although you do not need to be a good sight-reader), and you will have to be able to spell chords at the very least.

Highly recommended. I have already bought two more of his books and am digging them, too.

She loves me is truley Loveable!

This is the vocal selections for she loves me. This is a musical that is based on a book called she loves me. There is also a movie with Judy Garland in it (non musical) (can't think of the title right now) but it is about this lady named Amalia and a man names george. they both work in Maraczeks Parfumerie. George has been writing letters to a "dear friend" as well as amliea . amelia decides to meet her dear friend at a resturant. she is to wear a red rose on her jacket. her freind will also wear a rose. she watis and watis and he never shows up, then goerge from work appears and sits with her. (he is her dear friend but she doesn't know it yet) she accuses him of scaring away her friend. she eventauly finds out that he is her dear friend and they "live happily ever after" the great songs included are: WILL HE LIKE ME, DEAR FRIEND, ICE CREAM*, SHE LOVES ME, A TRIP TO THE LIBRARY, AND ILONA. my favorite is ICE CREAM it is cute song of amelia writing a letter to her dear friend apologising for the horrible evening that never happend. however she can't stop thinking about geroge and how nice he was that he bought her vanilla ice cream to make her feel better. its cute and very funny. a great line from that song is ..."I sat there waiting in that cafe and never guessing that you were fat... that you were near you were outside looking bald...oh my dear friend..." most of the music in this selection is for a soprano woman. He is even able to help his mother support his younger siblings. All this changes when he is fired in order to give the job to a man with a family who is related to the boss. Moss leaves Texas by hitching a ride on a freight train. Trying to locate his father, he finds him in Montana–drunk, jobless, and homeless. He himself is picked up for vagrancy. With neither job prospects nor money and to avoid another arrest, he joins the Civilian Conservation Corps. The work is hard, but it provides a place to live, food, and money to send home. Hitch is essentially a coming-of-age story. Moss, who from the beginning has shown a sense of responsibility, must now make adult decisions about how to react to adversity and discord within the CCC as he assumes a leadership role, albeit reluctantly. His growth from an impulsive teen into a thoughtful young man is told in a compelling manner. Moreover, both her writing style and her 1930s setting feels totally true to the time. Often teens in historical novels seem like today's youth, merely plunked down in a different era. That's not true of protagonist Moss Trulawany, who seems utterly of his time. After being laid off from his job at an airstrip, Moss sets out to find his father, who is supposed to be working to help his family. But Mr. Trulawany is really an unemployed drunk, so it's up to Moss to find work. Through a string of fortunate events in which some people care enough to help him, Moss finds a job in Montana with the CCC, where, to his surprise, his leadership qualities surface. Some of the characters and situations are stock (as they might have been in 1930s books or movies), but the good versus bad simplicity of many of the incidents works in context. Hitch is the story about a seventeen year-old boy named Moss who is living in the Great Depression. After he is fired from his job, he goes off in search for a new one so he can provide for his family. He finds work at Roosevelt's Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), and it changes his life. At the training camp, he quickly makes some new friends, but some enemies too, including a man named Compton, who is one of the camp's junior leaders. Soon after he gets there, he almost gets kicked out for fighting with two boys who were hassling his friends. However, he is allowed to stay with a warning and is chosen to go with a group to try and set up a new CCC camp and restore the land in Montana, which is where Moss' friend Nate lives. The boys manage to get the camp built in time and, in the process, Moss is appointed a junior leader. After the new boys come in, they start on one of their first conservation projects in Montana, building a dam. However, a new captain takes over the camp, who works the boys too hard and doesn't care about the quality of what they're doing, only pleasing the inspectors. When Moss finds out that he is buying cheap supplies, the captain takes away his junior leader position. As a result, the rest of the boys in the CCC go on strike. Soon afterwards they discover that the cement they had used in the dam they built was also cheap, and the water in the dam was going to flood Nate's family's farm. At first the CCC boys refuse to help, but after Moss' convincing, they put up sandbags and dig an alternate route for the water, and manage to save the plants. Moss decides to stay another term at the CCC, even though some of his friends aren't, and everyone is happy in the end.

After reading this book, I have decided that the times mostly shape the individual, but cannot be used as an excuse for how people act. The characters in this book had to learn to work extra hard for money because of the Great Depression. Today, most boys Moss' age wouldn't be so pressed for money as they were then. Also, people today have become more lazy as a result of all of the new technology and conveniences. In Moss' eyes, the Depression brought out the worst in people. He says: "The endless blasted, blasted Depression. All it did was make people be less than you expected, until it took them away from you altogether" (Ingold, 236). Moss blames the bad changes in people on the Depression, which probably does have a negative impact on some people, but it is their choice how to act. In conclusion, though times do shape people, they shouldn't let themselves be brought down because of them.

A wonderful YA book!

Seventeen-year-old Moss Trawnley has a big job on his hands. The Great Depression is ravaging America. His Ma is depending on him to help support the family. His Pa has been missing for years. When he's let go from his job in Texas, Moss decides it's time to head out after his Pa, who used to run their farm before the Depression cost their family everything. What Moss finds is a drunk and the truth that his real job is to become a man he can respect, against the odds.

A judge points Moss in the direction of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and Moss jumps at the chance for a steady paycheck and somewhere to eat, sleep, and work for six months. What he doesn't foresee are the friends he'll make along the way or the man he will become.

A proud and honest main character and several side characters with appealing nicknames like Apple, Romeo, and The Senator, are just part of the strength of Ingold's Hitch. Filled with images of the dry promise of Montana, boys struggling to be men in a time when men were being broken by misfortune, and the deeds that make boys brothers, Ingold's Hitch is a digestible historical book for the teenage reader.

Ingold's attention to historical details and her use of historical dialect to relay Moss's story, help the book move along while also teaching the reader about a period that defined the American work ethic. Hitch will especially strike a chord for underprivileged teens; but for all teens, the way Moss takes responsibility and builds himself and a part of Monroe, Montana into a new promise will inspire.

Perfect for classroom reading material or as an exploration into a chapter in American history, Hitch will lead readers on a journey of discovery, obstacles, triumphs, and new beginnings.

Just listened to Ian's synopsis of what this book is about and it makes a LOT of sense. I cannot believe someone would give this author and book a negative review. He is trying to help and do his small part to wake up the majority of people that are just sitting around doing nothing.

Everyone loves to hear those words "Gosh, you were right". I know I do. Except this once. This time my "paranoia" hasn't gone far enough. Not nearly far enough. I'm only at the start of chapter 4, and I am astonished at the depth of the invasion of our lives by the state/corporations (which is the same thing really). This is an absolute must read book for everyone on the planet, the only challenge being that by the time the book was written and published it was already out of date, such is the pace of technological progress. Still, it gives an extremely valuable insight into what's really going on, and into just how trapped we-the-people really are. It's far scarier than any Steven King book.

Time to get smart people, and count the cost of our convenience.

Having now finished this book, it goes so much deeper than just your fridge being used to spy on you (which it is, by the way). It covers so much more. It goes almost to the very heart of the matter (Hiding in Plain Sight by Ken Bowers goes the rest of the way, and more) and gives an excellent, well documented, description of what's really going on in the world at some of the most senior levels. The conspiracy "theory" is in reality a very well documented fact.

You might well be surprised to learn what several prominent religions are really up to, or what the not so innocent and benevolent United Nations has in store for you and your family via some very questionable international treaties being enforced by your local government. Like Article 2.2 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCROC). Like rat poison coated in sugary goodness the UN is one serious global problem.

My paranoia wasn't nearly bad enough.

Don’t bother making flash cards, just use these

If you really want to do well on this test and you know that flash cards work well for you in terms of study sessions, you might consider making cards. But it’s hard to know what to put on them and cards take time to make! These flash cards are a great alternative because you don’t have to put any time or effort into making them. All you have to do is buy them. And when you have them on hand, you have everything you need in order to do well on the test. The cards save you time because they organize the information for you and you can study them anywhere at all.

These flashcards for the ICTS School Counselor (181) exam are very comprehensive. They present the material in such a way that you get a better and clearer understanding of what they're talking about. They can be used along with study guides or on their own. They are great for people with busy schedules because you can take them anywhere and use them wherever you go. Continued use definitely helps you to remember the information and for those problem questions, the cards often have space where you can reword the definition to suit your style.

All these card are is information right out of the matching book. The ENTIRE back of the card is covered in information... this is not a flash card. It is not productive or helpful.
