Nice Update To An Old Standard, with One Irritating Change

I learned basic electronics from an earlier edition of this book in an Explorer Scout class back in the late sixties, at 14 years old. It was a great textbook then, so I ordered two copies of this updated edition - one for a student I'm teaching, and one for my personal use. It was good to see that it was still available.

The update seems to have retained the high quality of the previous editions and should give a pretty solid foundation to those brave enough to tackle the subject. However, I was very disappointed to see that this edition was converted from "conventional" current flow (+ to -) to electron flow (- to +). Yes, it's certainly the "correct" direction from the theoretical viewpoint of an atomic physicist, but I strongly suspect that most electronics engineers (and, indeed, most people with layman's knowledge of electronics) think of "conventional" (hole) flow when tracing a circuit, not electron flow. I am definitely one of those individuals.

One star deducted for the change, but still highly recommended.

I Think This Is the One

i bought a used copy of this book.

I studied basic electronics years ago, as part of a technical college A.S. in computer repair. But, I never much used it, even though I DID spend time working on computers, then as an electronics tech, and, later, on copying machines, which are electro-mechanical. Mostly, repairing computers was about swapping whole circuit boards out. As a tech, I assisted people with doctorates doing basic research on making chips. Never did I need to understand a circuit, or troubleshoot one. Had I to do it over, I would've looked for an opportunity to do just that for at least a few years, to really cement techniques and understanding..

Now, I want to be able to fix guitar amplifiers, effects pedals, and pickups. So, I really want to understand components, circuits, and chips at a fundamental level. I've found numerous sites on the web that teach electronics, and I have several other books on electronics. Although I'M ONLY INTO THE 2ND CHAPTER OF THIS BOOK, it's the best source I've found so far., because it explains the fundamental details of electricity and electronics at a level, and in a manner, that i can understand. I'm the kind of person that, if I have too many holes in my understanding of how something works, it just doesn't work for me. I read a Complete Idiot's guide. It had a lot of really good things but, for instance, the description of how a transistor works was like hieroglyphics; it explained it in a way that was at far too high a level. I read it three times and didn't have any more understanding than before I read it at all. I've found that if I go slowly with this book, and make sure I understand and retain the important details, it all builds to a solid mental structure in my brain.

I will revisit and edit this review as necessary. A good, accurate (we're different people, so what's true and accurate for you will only sometimes be that for me) review is a major service to others that I've benefited from when others have taken the time and trouble to describe their experience with a book or product. I bought this book in the first place because the reviews described it much as I have.

Great book to. Start with but need tutors

Very detailed excellent knowledge of subject. However, you will never be able to build a circuit with what he teaches. I found chegg.com helpful for that. Cheap high quality tutors. To make a circuit you need to know two things. From current(I), voltage(V or E), resistence(R), and power(watt or P). It all boils down to knowing resistence because you already know voltage. Without power on circuit you can't find resistence or anything. The tutors told me to get a watt meter and under power the circuit volts on power on. Then check for watts. Technical errors scattered among the good information

See my technical review of the errors I found in the first 100 pages at [...] SAE fixed at least the worst of the errors in the second edition, also Rudy used some quotes from my review of the second text which I sent to SAE before it was published in the book without attribution. Whatcha gonna do?

Grade 3–5—Inspired by Margaret Ward Cole's classic book of the same title, Zarin retells 10 stories that chronicle the interactions of holy men and women with an eclectic menagerie of wild creatures. Saint Canice befriends a patient stag that allows him to use its antlers as a bookstand, Saint Jerome champions a misunderstood lion, and Saint Brendan is rescued at sea by a great whale. Two women are represented: Saint Hilda saves her fellow sisters from an influx of snakes, and Saint Werburge prevents a flock of greedy geese from gobbling up all of the seeds planted in farmland. The majority of the tales are set in ancient England or Ireland. Written in the conversational style of a storyteller, the selections contain lovely descriptions of the natural settings in which the saints and the animals coexist, but in moments of extreme emotion they tend to be slightly overwritten. Each legend is accompanied by a somber charcoal illustration depicting the saint and the featured animal, framed by a decorative border. Brief biographies appear at the end of the volume. Brother Wolf, Sister Sparrow: Stories about Saints and Animals (Holiday House, 2003), retold by Eric A. Zarin, captivated by a 1905 book entitled Saints among the Animals,used that book and others as the basis for these stories of 10 saints, most living in the Dark Ages, and their often miraculous relationship with animals. The most famous is Saint Francis and the oft-told tale of how he dealt with the wolf of Gubbio. There are also stories of Saint Werburge, an English abbess who takes on troublesome geese; Saint Kenneth, a misshapen young man saved by birds; and Saint Hilda, who tames an infestation of snakes. Like many stories of saints, these tales contain elements that are not particularly child-friendly. For instance, the story of Saint Colman turns on the fact that the popular monk is a happy man, but to properly serve the Lord, he must live in isolation. Still, readers drawn to these tales will probably accept their quirks. The tales are neatly told, and the book's effective format--tall, with handsome charcoal artwork--is a pleasure to hold in hand. An intelligent and informative introduction to Homoeopathy

This book opened my eyes to a whole new way of looking at health and healing. It has changed my life. Homoeopathy is a gentle and natural way to overcome many health problems that conventional medicine has no way of treating. It looks to the whole person, body and mind, to seek out the causes of illness. Although this book is full of excellent background information, and is very helpful in acute situations, people must not try to treat chronic problems without the guidance of a professional homoeopathic physician.
