About the Author

Dr Andy Buchanan is Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. He has a B.E.(Honours) degree from the University of Canterbury, a Masters degree from the University of California at Berkeley, and a Ph.D from the University of British Columbia, Canada. He is a structural engineer with special interests in fire resistance, earthquake engineering and timber structures. After gaining experiences as a consulting structural engineer, he joined the University of Canterbury over 20 years ago, where he established the fire engineering programme, leading to the first edition of Structural Design for Fire Safety in 2001. His recent research interests are in structural design and fire performance of multi-storey timber buildings, including the rebuild of Christchurch after recent devastating earthquakes.

Dr Anthony Abu is a Senior Lecturer in Structural Fire Engineering at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. He has a B.Sc.(High Honour) degree from Eastern Mediterranean University in Northern Cyprus, and a Ph.D from the University of Sheffield, UK. Dr Abu is a structural engineer with particular expertise in building resistance to fires. He has worked with consultancies in both the UK and New Zealand to develop structural fire engineering solutions for stadia, office complexes and airports. He was involved in the implementation of the structural fire engineering Eurocodes in the UK. At the University of Canterbury he teaches structural mechanics and structural fire engineering, and has been involved in fire resistance research for steel, reinforced concrete and timber structures since 2009.

Big Fat Book o' Problems

I recently took the GRE and will probably retake it soon (aced the verbal, but need improvement in the quant department). Having relied on other books to review concepts and learn test-taking strategies, I ordered this one for practice. And practice is exactly what you'll get with this massive, five-pound behemoth of a book. As an added bonus, it will seriously help you tone your arms.

The first thing to be clear about is that this is (as advertised) a supplement. It should not be the only GRE prep book you use: think of it as a workbook to go along with your textbook. In other words...

WHAT IT IS

A great mental workout consisting of lots and lots of drills. Once you know the basics, this will really help reinforce what you've learned. There is a range of difficulty, though the difficulty level is not generally marked.

Rather quant-heavy. The quantitative portion takes up about two-thirds of the book, but this makes sense since there is so much ground to cover. You'll find every type of problem that will appear in that section, broken down by category so you can focus on your trouble areas.

WHAT IT'S NOT

A bag o' tricks. This book will not teach you how to "outsmart" the GRE or provide you with shortcuts for solving the problems.

A book of practice tests. However, the back of the book does include timed practice sections: one easy, medium, and difficult section for both quantitative and verbal.

STRENGTHS

Excellent explanations in the answer sections. These were simple, clear, and easy to understand. Answers in the quant section show how to solve the problems step by step, while also reviewing relevant concepts. Verbal explanations were likewise great. For example, I'm sometimes stumped by "inference" questions in the reading comprehension sections--how much of a logical leap should you make in choosing an answer? This book clarified that very well.

Verbal section very reflective of the real GRE, "traps" and all.

Wonderful essay section. The prompts will give you a great sense of what to expect for the Analytical Writing Assessment. Each prompt is followed by a "take" and sample essay by a Manhattan Prep instructor. The "take" includes ideas for how to approach the prompt and how to effectively outline; both these and the sample essays are excellent.

Advanced quant section for test-takers aspiring to a perfect or near-perfect quant score. This covers the few very difficult Mathlete problems you're likely to see on each test. If you're not aiming for an engineering PhD at MIT, you can always skip this section.

SO-SO

This book will truly help you bone up on your math skills. However, quant problems seemed a little more straightforward (not easy, just straightforward) than the real GRE, which loves to trick you. [For example, if you don't read a GRE question carefully, you may end up doing a lengthy equation that wasn't even necessary.]

Fairly solid vocab list in the back, but definitions are not included (the book recommends some online dictionaries). Then again, it's not like this book really needs to be any heavier.

BOTTOM LINE

Overall, this gargantuan tome will definitely help you ameliorate any stupefaction you have with the abstruse problems on the GRE. I especially recommend it for those who, like me, need a lot of math practice.

BUY IT. BUY IT NOW.

I've taken the GRE twice, two years apart.

First time around - studied from ETS, Princeton Review and Kaplan. I did alright. The practice material from PR and Kaplan isn't the same level of rigor as the ETS exam, and ETS's book has a limited number of practice problems. So I did a lot of practice, but it didn't prepare me for the more difficult math and reading sections later in the test. My 2nd sections increased in difficulty and I was overwhelmed.

Second time, two years later - Started with Kaplan and Princeton Review, but again was feeling underprepared. A friend recommended the 5lb Manhattan Prep book to me. GAME. CHANGER. I wish I had known about this book with more time before taking the GRE again, I probably would have also invested in some of Manhattan Prep's other study material for the quantitative section. A large part of taking standardized tests is getting a feel for the test, which only comes from lots of practice. This book gives you:
-- a ton of practice, at the right level of difficulty. 500+ pages of just math practice and explanations (nevermind all of the reading and essay practice in this beast of a book)
-- 30-50 practice questions for EACH topic. I found this really helpful because it allowed me to see the nuances between different kinds of probability or triangle questions, etc. At the end there are mixed sections to tie it all together, plus a section of advanced quantitative questions if you've mastered everything else.
--AWESOME answer explanations. They're thorough, often detailing alternate approaches - different perspectives are really useful if you don't understand something the first time around.

I'm so happy with how this book prepared me, and much happier with my score the second time around. I agree with other reviewers that ETS is still the best practice material, but this is definitely the second best book you can buy to prepare yourself. I've never felt compelled to write a review for anything until now. Buy this book buy this book, even if you only have a few weeks of studying left, it's worth it.

Great GRE Study Guide

This GRE study guide is a good way to prepare for the big exam. It's a big book with what to expect on the exam, how to study for the different parts, practice questions and practices tests with answers and explanations. There are also online resources with more of the same. I think the questions in this book are a good representation of the exam questions and by working through it, it can let you know what areas you're weak in and what you've already mastered. I've found that these types of study aides have always served me well and by getting this test prep several weeks in advance and working through a section each day, one should be prepared to get a great score on the GRE. Another great study aid that really helped me with the GRE is Neutropix – Support Brain Function, Memory, Attention Span, Concentration & Clarity – it is an amazing supplement that enhances your memory, focus and cognition, great for studying.

Stand up to your company's CFO

I don't usually write reviews but thought I should here as a public service to people like me who get bullied by smug CFOs. If you are like me, you don't spend your time reading financial books. If you do, I wouldn't recommend this book to you. I mean I think the book is good but you'd probably think it was beneath you. This book is meant for people who don't work in a "finance" job, however, who want to know their way around a spreadsheet as necessary. This book has definitely helped me talk my way around my company's financial reports and it could yours as well.

I'm too busy working to spend my day analyzing spreadsheets and financial reports. Yet, I'm responsible for delivering the numbers that my boss wants on a few key financial measures. Sometimes I don't always hit my monthly P&L numbers and that's when the information I learned in this book becomes the most valuable. After reading the book I know enough about financial reports to sound intelligent. When the CFO and my boss conduct their monthly review of my key benchmarks, they always seem to focus on the number in the spreadsheet that fell short of their expectations. I used to sweat these monthly meetings, but now I can point out other numbers in the income statement and balance sheet that influence my benchmark.

I read the first edition of this book after receiving it at a company seminar. I just finished this updated version after loading it onto my Kindle. The most recent book added new material about the recent financial crises and expanded upon accounting literacy to include in-depth review of some new financial reports. I liked it. Must read for all employees at all levels...

i don't normally write reviews but i have to say this is the best financial book i've ever read...i have spent the past 15 or so years at the coo level with finance reporting to me...and while i'm financially savvy, i have no formal financial education...i'm a believer that finance, like any profession or industry, gets bogged down in its own set of acronyms and language...that in and of itself creates the silos too often found in organizations...sales has it, marketing has it, hr has it, etc...etc...

i always try to break down barriers and most of my time is spent as a translator...truth be told, i've always struggled with translating the financial lingo...this book did it for me and has helped me paint a picture and tell the story behind it so everyone understands...

Finance Can be Fun

Berman and Knight have done the impossible -- make the topic of finance clear, interesting, even fun! Finance is not one of my favorite topics. I typically nod off when engaged in finance-related conversations or sitting in yet another, interminable budget meeting. But I actually found myself looking forward to picking up this book whenever I had time to read for yet another discussion of balance sheets, profitability ratios, and yes, my personal favorite, EBITs.

Their explanations are clear, their ripped-from-the-headlines examples are relevant and compelling, and their writing style is lively. Their frequent playful and humorous asides help to humanize the material.

There are many helpful features in this book. One of my favorites is the embedded glossary - i.e., definitions that appear in a box on the page where the expressions are first used rather than at the end, requiring the reader to flip back and forth and risk losing their concentration. The toolbox at the end of each Part that gives the reader a hands-on opportunity to try out the concepts they have just learned is also helpful.

In addition, I appreciated their emphasis on finance as art not science, subject to assumptions, biases, even manipulation and fraud. I guess I knew that, but I didn't realize just how subjective it can be. And their discussion of the difference between cash and profit and the relationship between the two was especially lucid, lifting the fog that usually accompanies my attempts to understand, and most important, apply this concept.

This book is a must read for any manager. Armed with this book, they can make better financial decisions and more effectively manage their people, technology and resources. Perhaps most important, they might even stay awake during those interminably boring budget meetings and possibly even influence the discussions and outcomes.

About the Author
Adm. James Stavridis, USN (Ret.) is a 1976 distinguished graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy who spent over 35 years on active service in the Navy. He commanded destroyers and a carrier strike group in combat and served for seven years as a four-star admiral, including nearly four years as the first Navy officer chosen as Supreme Allied Commander for Global Operations at NATO. After retiring from the Navy he was named the dean of The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in 2013. In addition, he currently serves as the U.S. Naval Institute's Chair of the Board of Directors. He has written articles on global security issues for The New York Times, The Washington Post, Atlantic Magazine, Naval War College Review, and Proceedings and is the author or co-author of several books, including Command at Sea 6th Ed. and Destroyer Captain.

Captain Robert Girrier has served at sea on cruiser-destroyer units. He commanded USS Guardian (MCM-5) and USS Roosevelt (DDG-80).

A year before I made Chief, I bought one of these. It was instrumental in preparing for the next step in my career. Since I retired in 1990 I lost track of the book and wanted another one. Partly self serving

The princess' devotion to her brother, the king, is admirable but there is a lot in her life that people want to know that can not be found in this book. I do not believe any of the outlandish accusations leveled at her by her enemies, but I still believe her morals have been less than stellar.

Faces in a mirror

Having read several books on the islamic revolution, i tried to keep a balaned view of the information, but found this book to be an "they're lying, I didn't do what they are accusing me of and neither did my brother". I think this book was written too soon after the revolution. I do agree with her that the shah was betrayed by people he thought were friends, namely America.

I read this book years ago and always remembered it. Lately I decided to try to find it and Amazon had it! It is a strange and sad story about the life of Ashraf Pahavia and how differently she was treated from her twin brother the Shah. They both went from a living the life of royalty, luxury and great wealth to exile. It was a hard book to put down. Excellent read!

Awesome Audio Book

My 11yr old son and I checked out the first audio cd of this series from our library but after listening to it and getting hooked on the story, we found out the library did not have the other books. So we ordered it on Amazon. We are so glad we did! This series is awesome and Holter Graham, the narrator of the series was an excellent choice. He has a lot of expression and gets you very excited about what is going on. We thought we would donate this to the library after listening to it but my son loved it so much he wants to keep it and listen to it again sometime.
