Reactive

This book introduces great ideas for addressing apathy. However, the book is largely reactive; it avoids a proactive approach. It reacts to students not doing their work based upon the assumption of apathy. However, a truly transformational approach would spearhead a proactive approach by considering the students, the community, the curriculum, and then create an environment that synthesizes these into a vision that all can support.
In end, if you want a bandage, then ICU will work by stealing time away from teachers' focus on teaching.

Our school is struggling with students not turning in assignments and a grading system that gives zeros. It clearly has led to student apathy. After reading this book, I hope to implement the Power of ICU in our school to promote student success.

they leave out deadlines like applications, contracts

The book is full of self-refuting statements and "research". They twist the definition of "enabling" to agree with their ideas, but not reality. The authors conveniently omit facts that do not support their claims. Claims that deadlines don't exist are based upon a company desiring to be paid. Any company wanting to be repaid for goods sold will of course continually follow up on the loan. However, they leave out deadlines like applications, contracts, grants, scholarships, certifications, taxes, purchasing a house, CDL license renewal, running for office, school board elections, voting...
The chapter of graphs used to prove success is full of data from different schools at different times with different teachers and different administrators. Any 5th grade student should know that experimental data can only be compared when only 1 variable changes. This can in no way be used as proof of concept.
If you are looking for something better for your school, you would be better off looking somewhere else.
