Reactive

This book introduces great ideas for addressing apathy. However, the book is largely reactive; it avoids a proactive approach. It reacts to students not doing their work based upon the assumption of apathy. However, a truly transformational approach would spearhead a proactive approach by considering the students, the community, the curriculum, and then create an environment that synthesizes these into a vision that all can support.

In end, if you want a bandage, then ICU will work by stealing time away from teachers' focus on teaching.

Our school is struggling with students not turning in assignments and a grading system that gives zeros. It clearly has led to student apathy. After reading this book, I hope to implement the Power of ICU in our school to promote student success.

they leave out deadlines like applications, contracts

The book is full of self-refuting statements and "research". They twist the definition of "enabling" to agree with their ideas, but not reality. The authors conveniently omit facts that do not support their claims. Claims that deadlines don't exist are based upon a company desiring to be paid. Any company wanting to be repaid for goods sold will of course continually follow up on the loan. However, they leave out deadlines like applications, contracts, grants, scholarships, certifications, taxes, purchasing a house, CDL license renewal, running for office, school board elections, voting...

The chapter of graphs used to prove success is full of data from different schools at different times with different teachers and different administrators. Any 5th grade student should know that experimental data can only be compared when only 1 variable changes. This can in no way be used as proof of concept.

If you are looking for something better for your school, you would be better off looking somewhere else.

Don Repo was my uncle

My name is Don and Don Repo ("Big Don") was my uncle. If you could overlay his personality within this book, you would realize what an unusual person he was. He loved everyone and everything and seemingly went through life w/o a care in the world.

Both my Mom and I were interviewed by John Fuller along with many others I'm sure.

The book not only accurately tells the events of the crash as a book unto itself, he became fasinated with the "Ghost" and included it in much of the book.

It is a fasinating story to read and once you begin you'll not put it down.

Read the book, but forget the movie. Ernest Borgnine who played "Big Don's" character was a very poor choice.

Read the book and enjoy. Non-believers in ghosts will scratch their heads over this one.

EXCELLENT.... DO NOT READ ALONE!

I have read just about every non-fiction ghost story available and this book with a few exceptions is by far one of the most entertaining. I care not that there is no solid evidence, just that this was a pure flight into the unkown (excuse the pun)! John Fuller (the author) takes us back to 1972, that fateful night when flight 401 to Miami never reaches its destination. I felt as thought I was on that plane. Every detail, sound and devastating emotion is teased with such horrific suspence and waiting, waiting for that final moment of impact. After the tradgedy of the crash start coming the reports from bewildered flight attendents and crew who claim to be experiencing vivid images relating to the deceased crew of the crash. These accounts are of a truly terrorfying nature and are portrayed with desperate sincerity. If you are a fan of TRUE ghost stories BUY THIS BOOK. You will not regret it!

Very Spooky, But Don't Expect Amityville-like Horror

I really enjoyed this book, and I end up having to replace my copy every few years. As other reviewers note, this is the nonfiction story of Eastern Flight 401, which crashed in the Everglades back in 1972. After the fact, pieces of the plane and equipment from it were salvaged to use on other planes; almost immediately, passengers and airline employees began reporting paranormal events. While a few of the sightings had to do with Captain Bob Loft (died from his injuries before being removed from the cockpit), the majority of them centered around Second Officer Don Repo (who lingered for thirteen hours before succumbing to his injuries). Some were as minor as a brief feeling of uneasiness; others went off the charts by having a fully formed human shape of Bob Loft sit in a seat (witnessed by all onboard, whom also witnessed the apparition simply disappearing) to Don Repo being seated in the cockpit when the pilot came on for the flight. Don announced, "Don't worry about the flight check; I've already done it." He then, in front of the pilot and a witness, disappeared. This book follows the author's attempts to validate these many events, through everything from simple interviews to using a Ouija board - on which, it seems, Don Repo came through quite clearly. While there are no glowing eyes, blood oozing from the walls, etc. in this book, there is enough 'creepiness' to make you feel like you just may be reading something based in fact, rather than an individual sitting down and throwing everything at the wall, and seeing what sticks. What struck me as interesting was that John G. Fuller seemed to set out to write a book respectful of the witnesses and stories, and he did a commendable job. I am a believer in paranormal matters, and so I found myself accepting that the events related could occur - if you are a non-believer, I'm not sure this book is strong enough in proof, names of witnesses, etc. to change your mind. Ironically enough, the pages I was least fond of were the ones when Don Repo is coming through on the Ouija; I have written a great deal on that subject, and the answers from Don (with apologies, if I'm being a jerk) seem to be too close to generic, unimportant things to impress me much. I guess I figure if Don came all that way, he'd probably have something more pressing to say than what the author relates to the reader -, but maybe I'm just being picky. And here's the rub - I do believe that it was Don on the Ouija, I just am not certain that he got to say what he wanted to say, if that makes sense. In the end, do I believe this story? Yes. I was very young when the crash occurred, and this was a very long time before instant viral info on the web, and I still heard about the ghost, Flight 401, etc (we traveled a great deal). Did I miss howling screams of terror and walls oozing blood in this book? No. It's quiet, organized and makes its' point without all that stuff. Lastly, you just may find yourself wondering, long after finishing this book, what became of Don Repo's family, whether they ever heard from him again, and if he went toward that light knowing nothing really ends. That's a good book, then, and despite a couple very small irks with it, I think that it deserves 5 stars.

I got this book for my daughter and she loved it! She read it over and over again. I read this after her, (I normally read what she reads) , and I, who knew almost nothing about Naruto, found this very inturiging. There are some characters my age, so I think anyone would like this book and the whole Naruto series!!

Maybe my expectations were too high

Naruto is one of the best animes out there. Some people think it's not a "true" anime; well, whatever you want to call it, it's one of the greatest and most creative shows out there. Now for the book. I thought this would have a lot of background info on the characters that they didn't say in the show; it doesn't. But it's still a great gift for anyone who likes the series. It has a lot of the stuff from the show that was either skimmed over or was so long ago most people can't remember. It also has puzzles, games, and other goofy Japanese goodness (***this book is NOT WRITTEN IN JAPANESE). Overall it's definitely a fun read.

Lots of Info

This shows a lot of info about Naruto, and it reads backwards like normal manga. It has fan drawings, a conversation with Masashi Kishimoto about what inspired him to create Naruto. It also has the character profiles of Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, Kakashi, and I think Iruka. It shows guesses on the nine rookies class grades, and many other things. I definitely recommend this product.

Chilling

Reisman demonstrates how American law and culture were turned on on their heads on the basis of shoddy and tendentious pseudo-science and data derived from Nazis, prostitutes and serial pedophiles. What's worse is that this project was aided and abetted by the prestige media and was underwritten by the Rockefeller Foundation. This book exposes the lurid depravity at the heart of the post-war American establishment. This has never been adequately dealt with in the years since Reisman's research came to light. The challenge she flung in the face of our society thirty years ago remains unanswered. Judith Reisman is an American hero and every American ought to read this book and carefully think about what it means.

Shrill tone aside, the book has an important message.

Unfortunately discussions of matters as important as human sexuality in our culture can take shrill and strident tones, both from a Cultural and Social Left seeing itself engaged in some emancapatory liberational project to liberate desire, and from a Cultural and Social Right seeing itself as embattled and defending a right and proper social traditional order assaulted by godless radicals.

Given the impact of these debates on human lives, and very importantly the lives of Children, getting some distance from taking heads and pundits is necessary. Social policy in these areas affect the mental, emotional, and physical health of not only our culture's children, but their futures as well.

Dr. Reisman is a favorite of some right wing circles, to many progressives and liberals this would discredit her. However I think that both sides of the spectrum should stop their cultural war feuding and listen to what she has to say on Kinsey and his research.

What she has to say is nothing short of damning, and looking beyond just this book, at her other works, and the sources she pulls from, there is a repeated picture painted of Kinsey that is nothing short of criminal, and involving scientific fraud of the lowest degree, extremely tendentious and biased presentation of research, and according to some records actual child rape and molestation under clinical conditions.

The allegations made, on the base of real historical research into Kinsey and his project, are severe and should be given a fair hearing. If both liberals and conservatives could put aside their mutual talking head pundits and actually engage the material Dr. Reisman has investigated, I think that both sides would find some room to re-examine many things.

Kinsey and his research were important watershed moments in our culture. On the one hand issues pertaining to human sexuality needed, cried out for, responsible research in an age and moment of rapidly changing moral norms.

On the other hand Kinsey may well have been the wrong man to have carried this needed duty. Flawed, we all are, but the definite possibility that his personal flaws may have let to outright scientific fraud and child molestation are very real possible implications of this book, and deserve fair hearing.

If Dr Reisman's claims and research prove accurate this does not mean that everything associated with Kinsey needs to be throw out. But a real re-evaluation of him, his methods, conclusions, and legacies would need to be done.

A compromise of the best kind!!!

This is definitely a new but old plot for a P&P variation. A compromise ensues between Elizabeth and Mr Darcy, we have seen this before (I do love this theme), but the conspirator(s) of said compromise is not who is expected, nor is the reason for the compromise to be expected.

This story begins just prior to the Netherfield Ball with a conversation between two old friends. What's nice is seeing the progression of understanding and emotions that ODC goes through while reconciling to their fate.

I love the addition of Lady Sophia, another sister of Lord Matlock who is more like Lady Anne Darcy than her stuffy brother and sister (Lord Matlock and Lady Catherine). I like the addition of Lord Rycroft as well, makes for another cousin Mr Darcy can count on.

I always enjoy variations where Mary is a stronger presence and is of more assist to Elizabeth, being a middle child (though only girl) myself I do feel some kinship to Mary. I like how she is portrayed, she is able to keep her morality and beliefs, though they are softened.

This is the first in a series of books (not sure how many), and I can't wait to get my hands on the next book!!!! This is appropriate and recommended for all JAFFers.

Love this book!

If I could give more than five stars, I would. I loved this sweet, well written variation on Jane Austen's classic. Elizabeth couldn't help but love this Darcy. I enjoyed it so much, I didn't want it to end. Then I wanted more information about Lord Rycroft. Lo and behold, that's the next book in the series. So, I am a happy camper.

If you love P&P variations, what ifs, whatevers, you should love this one. Way to go, Ms. Brown. I look forward to your future writings.

This was a very enjoyable story, but I think the price was too high for such a short one. At 70% of the book, it ended abruptly, giving way to samples of its sequel and other stories. I felt the ending deserved more. On the other hand, I do think that Leenie Brown's story-telling keeps getting better and better.
