The first part provides an introduction to pathogenic bacteria and sampling techniques and an overview of the rapid microbiological methods.

The second part describes the different transducers used for the detection of bacteria. When word comes out of a contest to determine who will design the dome, Pippo, a goldsmith known for his beautiful but useless oddities, is determined to win and shed his unwanted nickname. The judges decide upon his visionary design but also decree that he must work in concert with his chief rival and primary heckler, Lorenzo. Pippo is dismayed at the prospect of doing all the work and only receiving half the glory, but his determination to see his plan through to fruition wins out. Throughout, Estrada’s timeless art highlights Florence’s orange-roofed architecture and colorfully attired citizens. Readers won’t realize just how massive a project constructing the dome really was until they arrive at the scale-shifting detail of tiny workers, scaffolds, and cranes, a scene like something from David Macaulay’s The Way Things Work (1988). Although the primary drama between Pippo and Lorenzo is played out with grade-school churlishness, it offers a handy morality lesson: take joy in one’s accomplishments rather than the accolades to which they might lead. All picture books should be like this one!

I heard this story long ago... most certainly from my story-telling aunt, who had the power to do exactly what this phenomenal books does: to turn real life stories into a delightful tale for children! But while my good auntie illustrated her stories with words in a way only she could do, this new publication is illustrated by lines and color in a way that will captivate young and old alike. One would be reminded of Tomie De Paola, but a Tomie de Paola turned-to-life with much more realistic, rich-in-detail full page spreads.

The story is one of big dreams, inventiveness, and great doses of courage and perseverance. Half a millennium ago in Florence, the great cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore was all built, but for the dome... and a contest was announced for the building of an architectural feat never done before. Little Pippo, called the fool by the people, a goldsmith, dreamed of a plan... and had to undergo quite a bit to accomplish it!

Pictures books are such integral part of our family life... and books such as Pippo the Fool come to entertain, to educate and to delight. Hats off to writer and illustrator. Do not miss this gem!

A Renaissance feast for the eyes and soul!

"Pippo the Fool" is a delightful trip back in time to 15th Century Florence. Young readers, as well as used-to-be young readers, will immediately sympathize with Pippo, the fool of the city of Florence, whose ideas for fantastic inventions have earned him the unfortunate nickname. But, as a wise many once said, "the man with a new idea is a crank until the idea succeeds." And so it goes for Pippo. His perseverance pays off and his idea to achieve the impossible succeeds and he loses his detested nickname.

Tracy Fern has created a charming portrait of a little-known genius, whose accomplishment was equal to the achievements of Leonardo or Michelangelo. Readers will identify with "the little guy" who battles against the tide of public opinion to achieve what others consider the impossible.

Pau Estrada's superb and richly detailed illustrations recall the paintings of Renaissance masters while giving a very human face to the misunderstood Pippo. Together they have created a book that is a must-have for anyone who wants to introduce children to Renaissance art and architecture. .

I wish there were more historical books that told great story like this one. I've read this book aloud in 3 classrooms and all children (from PreK to 1st grade) have loved it. They understood the concept the story was trying to get across, without having to understand where Florence is on the map.

Just Can't Say Enough

How to you explain something that has had such a powerful effect on your life? McKenna reminds us that there are many kinds of "rich" and to look for the riches already in your life. It caused me to acknowledge that my life, both the rich and the not so rich aspects, were a reflection of the "wealth" I'd created. I'd been ignoring the evidence that I was a powerful manifestor! Now I'm aware and grateful everyday of what I've already created and that I'm capable of creating much more.

Do the worksheets in this book. As I did one of them, I was shocked at how much "@#%&" I STILL had about money! Old childhood programming was lurking in my subconscious - I had no idea it was even there. Listen to the CD that's included with the book. It's an opportunity to make real changes. As another reviewer wrote, the CD alone is worth the price of the book (but you've got to use it).

Brilliant

I have read 100's of very poor books on the Success Principles, Self Esteem, Laws of Attraction, Planning, Time Management, Wealth creation etc, in the last few years. I started reading books about goal setting, mind control and success principles in 1985. I have used what I learnt from my extensive reading, coupled with academic qualifications, business and psychology experience, to create a consulting company, teaching seminars to corporations in strategic thinking, leadership, marketing, goal setting and business development. I also use the principles to help individuals, by guiding them as a Peak Performance Coach, teaching people cognitive methods to help goal set and enhance their lives beyond what they could do on their own. As such, I read as many books as I can, on a variety of subjects to enhance my knowledge.

This is the first book I have read by Mr McKenna and must admit I have always tried to avoid his books, given his TV persona. Before reading this book, I had estimated McKenna as a bit of a rip off merchant, riding on the backs of Richard Bandler and John Grinder. I bought this book, as I had read so much on the subjects McKenna writes about, without reading McKenna, as I felt I should be a bit more open minded and read his ideas.

There is no doubt that many of the ideas in the book are based upon Bandlers work. In the first half of the book, I found very few new principles. What I did like were the application of the principles for Wealth Generation. McKenna has taken NLP principles and used them to create a wealth conciousness in the reader. Brilliant and simple and easy to understand. The smug pomposity that McKenna exudes on TV does not come across in the book. I was impressed.

The second half of the book gives you ideas of how to create wealth. Again there are some clever ideas.

So the book is split in 2 halves, 1st half creating the mind set using NLP techniques, 2nd half looking at ways of creating wealth.

The book is very well written with lots of drawings, making the application of the principles very easy to understand. The CD that comes with the book contains NLP suggestions and is not a gimic, as I thought before buying the book.

I therefore recommend this book without any reservations at all. I have bought all the other books that McKenna has written to see if they are as good.

This is the second book I have read by Paul. He has a refreshing style of writing and shares some very good ideas. I will be getting this book as gifts this year for nieces and nephews as well as friends who may be considering opening a business.
