A woman of strength

Is our beauty only skin deep? I was there when they brought her in to the trauma center. Her injuries were shocking, even for a twenty year plus trauma nurse. I cared for her while she was in the ICU. I am so pleased to read her thoughts at that time. I was looking from a different view of this trauma. I did see right away the strength she had, the support of her sweet husband and the concerns of her doctors. I handed her the mirror to look at herself for the first time after the attack. I knew after we got her stabilized and got her through the initial trauma she would have a long road ahead of her. I see that she drew on her faith, her support and love of her husband and the talents and generosity of her doctors. Beauty is not just skin deep. Her beauty is throughout her whole being. I can look at her then and now and do not see anything ugly. I only see the beauty, the immense beauty that radiants from Anne.

A story of personal growth and transformation, deep and personally moving

As a mountain biker for more than 25 years, and having had several encounters with big cats in those years, this poignant and personal account was much more moving than I expected. Though I've ridden the trails referred to in the book, her story and the message within is relevant to a much broader audience than the local mountain biking community. I remember the media's obsession with her story at the time, choosing to dissociate myself from it at the time so as not to hinder my enjoyment of our local mountains. This book puts it all back in perspective.

It's a story of how a life-changing, near-death experience can lead to personal growth. It documents the deeply personal process of turning such a devastating experience into an empowering one. The story opens with a graphic and riveting account of the initial event itself, but then the subsequent difficulty of her transformation draws the reader in. We join her in her challenging road to recovery and self-acceptance. Such a road has been traveled by many victims of accidents or violence, and her story is no less inspiring. Ultimately, her inner strength is challenged and fortified, leading to a greater good that has a far reaching impact beyond the mountain biking community for which we both share a special passion and bond. I enjoyed the read, completing it in a single sitting. It raised personal questions in myself, about what could have been in my own several cougar encounters, and other personal challenges I've faced, and to which I can only aspire to rise to meet with the grace and inner strength she has so well portrayed in this story.

Puts life in perspective

This amazing true story is one woman's account of how she had to literally rebuild her identity and piece her life back together, after her face was horribly scarred by a mountain lion. It is all the more engrossing because she doesn't shy away from letting us know her less than flattering thoughts about how she briefly considered that death would be a better option than permanent disfigurement. In a world where everyone is becoming more and more obsessed with physical beauty this book really makes you think about what is important in life, and how lucky we are with what we have.

"Change is hard." "People hate change." Those were two of the most common quotes we heard when we began to study change.

But it occurred to us that if people hate change, they have a funny way of showing it. Every iPhone sold serves as counter-evidence. So does every text message sent, every corporate merger finalized, every aluminum can recycled. And we haven’t even mentioned the biggest changes: Getting married. Having kids. (If people hate change, then having a kid is an awfully dumb decision.)

It puzzled us--why do some huge changes, like marriage, come joyously, while some trivial changes, like submitting an expense report on time, meet fierce resistance?

We found the answer in the research of some brilliant psychologists who’d discovered that people have two separate “systems” in their brains—a rational system and an emotional system. The rational system is a thoughtful, logical planner. The emotional system is, well, emotional—and impulsive and instinctual.

When these two systems are in alignment, change can come quickly and easily (as when a dreamy-eyed couple gets married). When they’re not, change can be grueling (as anyone who has struggled with a diet can attest).

In those situations where change is hard, is it possible to align the two systems? Is it possible to overcome our internal "schizophrenia" about change? We believe it is.

In our research, we studied people trying to make difficult changes: People fighting to lose weight and keep it off. Managers trying to overhaul an entrenched bureaucracy. Activists combatting seemingly intractable problems such as child malnutrition. They succeeded--and, to our surprise, we found striking similarities in the strategies they used. They seemed to share a similar game plan. Chip and Dan Heath’s Switch – although a more superfluous exploration of change management than the more scholarly pieces on the subject by Dr. John Kotter and Dan Cohen – facilitates great conversations and brings forth profound questions and insight into the emotional dimension of change management. Instead of focusing on “people problems” so agonized over by Dan Cohen in his The Heart of Change, Switch offers provocative narratives that instill a more practical and wholesome approach to change management that “puts feelings first.” “Finding bright spots,” “shaping the path” and “creating new habits” are Chip and Dan Heath’s well-contextualized reiterations of the aforementioned scholars’ approaches to change management. More useful are the mobilization and strategy concepts offered in Switch: “scripting critical moves” and “people versus situation problems.” These two concepts are what resonate most resoundingly in Chip and Dan Heath’s case akin to Peter Drucker’s “culture eats strategy for breakfast” approach to resolving barriers to change.

This book delivers: how to really make change happen

There is no doubt that change is hard, but this book actually explains how to make change occur. It covers how to make changes even when people don’t see the need to change, don’t believe change will work, or agree change is required but aren’t making any progress toward changing.

The book begins by explaining why change is so hard. The reason is that we have rational and emotional minds that have different objectives. While my rational mind knows that I should be at the gym, for instance, my emotional mind says it’s okay to watch TV and eat potato chips. The authors describe how change happens and many strategies to make change occur.

The strength of the book is its wide variety of examples. They changes include personal (exercising more), education (getting kids to class on time), family (keeping the house clean), corporate (improving innovation and reducing injuries), medical (reducing medication errors in hospitals) and social change (saving a species). Each strategy comes with many examples. The book also includes case studies so that you can apply the methodologies to your own life.

This is one of my all-time favorite books. It will help you understand why change hasn’t occurred and how to make it happen.

The book Switch: How To Change Things When Change Is Hard, was a really good book! The book has three main concepts that are addressed: Directing the Rider, Motivating the Elephant, and Shaping the Path. By addressing the following concepts, change should be easier to accomplish. The Rider refers to a person’s logical side of thinking. This concept suggests that to encourage change, one needs to eliminate ambiguity. This concept is broken down into 3 sections: identify bright spots, scripting critical moves and pointing to the destination. Motivate the Elephant- The elephant refers to a person’s emotional side. There are three concepts discussed to activate the elephant: Find the feeling, shrink the change, and grow your people. Shape the Path: “What looks like the problem is often a situational problem.” The path is the environment or situations that are involved with a change. This was a really good read with many excellent examples throughout. I highly recommend this book.

Grade 5 Up-Anyone who has been touched by Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl will be moved by this account that opens on the day Anne received the journal for her 13th birthday. The color photo of the diary set opposite the text lends immediacy and a sense of reality to the commentary. The feelings are reinforced throughout by the authors' prodigious research and the accumulation of details through the photographs. Some of the pictures included have never been published before, and their lengthy captions describe not only who is in the photos, but also the circumstances under which they were taken. Framed pages expand on the political and economical situations of the time. The well-written main narrative, which uses aptly chosen quotations from the diary, takes readers from Anne's normal, happy childhood through the years in the Secret Annex to the betrayal and Anne's death from typhus in Bergen-Belsen just months before her 16th birthday and only weeks before the liberation of the camp. For readers the loss is double. One feels the personal loss of a bright, fun-loving, and talented individual who might have made a difference in the world and also remembers that many Anne Franks died during that nightmarish period.

Gr. 5-12. Like the classic diary, this photobiography translated from the Dutch captures the ordinariness of Anne Frank's life. The particulars personalize the sorrow of the six million gone. The individual photos of Anne's early life are generally unexceptional, mostly snapshots, a bit blurry at times, like any family album; that's why they bear witness to the way genocide destroyed people like you and me. At the same time, the book puts Anne Frank's story in a historical context. The handsome design, with well-captioned photographs and short essays in spacious type, will hold browsers as well as those who want to read the book through. Excerpts from Anne's diaries are combined with an account of the two years in the Secret Annex (from the time of going into hiding until the betrayal, arrest, and deportation) and also with a general history and photographs of the rise of Nazism and the fate of the Jews. Several large, clear maps also tell the story, including where Anne Frank lived (from Germany to Holland to the Secret Annex to Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen). A final section talks about the return of Anne's father after the war, the setting up of the Anne Frank House as a museum in 1960, and the diary's authenticity. There are photos of those who risked their lives to hide the Franks, including Miep Gies, who found the diary after Anne was taken away.

Everything is quiet, low-key: There's no milking of the legend. It's hard to know which pages are more heartbreaking: the facsimile of the last diary entry; the picture of the marks on the wall recording the growth of Anne and her sister in their hiding place; the mass scenes of the transports and concentration camps. All libraries will want this: for classroom units studying the Holocaust, for kids reading the diary, for everyone who remembers it. In an interview in Book Links (Sept_. 1993), coauthor Verhoeven, a historian at the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, emphasizes the connection between what happened to Anne Frank and racism today. Anne Frank: An inner furnace in our souls

Some quirky calculus seems to rule the story of Anne Frank and her diary. The further time recedes from the pivotal events of the diary's origins, the more people seem interested in Anne as a person, Anne as a Holocaust statement, Anne as a publishing phenomenon, or just Anne as a long-lost tragic friend. I was just thirteen when I read her book, the same age that she started scribbling her thoughts in that famous checked binder with the little metal clasp. Thirteen is an age when childhood lies like freshly cut grass in recent memory, with puberty and adulthood new temptations soon to be savoured. Her original diary seems to kindle some inner furnace in our souls. The magic of the story is that we want to know more, more about Anne, her life, her family, her silent footsteps after the Annex.
Ruud van der Rol and Rian Verhoeven's photographic remembrance of Anne - Beyond the Diary - is a touching and fitting tribute to the Dutch schoolgirl's legacy. Anna's Quindlen's poignant introduction strikes the right emotional notes for what follows. She says Anne's diary has a kind mystical quality for the adolescents who first encounter it and for the adults left with its spiritual aftertaste. These are happy times: family, friends, movies, a day at the beach. But a sombre bell tolls...
Like melancholy drapes blocking the sunlight, the remainder of the book catalogues the Frank family in hiding as Nazism throws its fetid shadow. There are photographs of That List - not Schindler's - but Anne's. Her name appears on the passenger manifest for the last transport from Westerbork to Auschiwitz and then, sadly, on the final Red Cross declaration. The photographs, accompanied by the simple text, are a revelation. This book comes as close as any to capturing Anne's allure. But Anne in "Beyond the Diary" is still somehow beyond reach. We love her diary because we seem to share so much with her. Her last footprints show, in fact, that we probably share very little...

Follow-up to the classic

This book shares the pictures of concentration camps and tells what happened to the various members of the Frank family after they were found by the German secret police. It also states that had she survived just a few days longer, Anne would've been alive when the people of the concentration camps were released by the Allied troops. This has some heartbreaking information and pictures in it. It's marketted to kids, but some of the pictures may be a bit too difficult for a child to look at on his or her own. If you get this for a child, sit and explain what they are looking at.

Long time B&D reader. Really enjoyed the book.

This book is almost exclusively aimed at entrepreneurs and artists, which I'm not. Execs, military, physicians, PhD's, plenty of leaders in self-purpose driven fields who would benefit from Victor's motivational skills, but he's really got a hard-on for his online entrepreneur demographic and it's throbbing throughout the entire book.

It would've been easy to read it as if I was critiquing it. To just browse through it casually, comparing it to other works of self-improvement, looking for things I agreed with and disagreed with. Maybe reading with my eyes, while thinking about something else.

Instead I read it with full attention. I turned off the option to see what others highlighted (because seriously.. who gives a sh**?) I let myself get absorbed into it. I entered the mindset of a person who thinks like the author and says the words he says and genuinely believes them. I finished the book over the course of two nights and I was left wanting to take over the world. It was like I'd popped an adderall that lasted a full week.

Of course, motivation is temporary. Discipline is what counts. Luckily I've got a good amount of that already, so a burst of extra motivation every now and then is useful. If you know how to use that fleeting, fired up feeling that some movies and books will leave you with, get this book.

Victor is a master of motivational writing. That's all there is to say. You will be fired up. It'll be temporary like all things, but you can do a lot in that time to start new habits, plan for your future, and get moving (or moving faster) towards the life you want to be living.

Helped me find my direction in life.

I loved the breakdown showing the difference between black and white work (necessary maintenance) and full color work (creative) and why each is essential. Also good was the description of the ideal work environment. I'd only criticize that toward the end there was some repetition. However, the final bit with the worksheet really worked well for me. I now know what is really important. I'm one of the over thinkers always hesitating, trying to find the perfect plan. When I quit my 9 to 5, I floundered, mentally running in all directions. This book has given me the keys to choose and move.
If anyone reads this who hasn't read the website too, I also recommend that -boldanddetermined.com. This book pulls together a lot of ideas from the website to show how everything comes together. You can see how many of these topics are dealt with individually on the website.

A Phenomenal Book for a Specific Audience.

I just finished reading this book and have to say I loved it.

I have to warn you though that this book is not for everyone.

And yet this is what makes it such a good book.

It feels like wisdom being handed down to a new generation from someone who's already been there.

It's for all the people out there struggling to try and figure out how to get more out of their life. The guys who can't stand another second of the 9-5 but can't settle for just any method of making money.

If you aren't tuned in to the frequency required to take this book in, then it won't make sense.

But if you are, then this book is exactly what you've been waiting for.

As an outcast and an artist, this book could not come at a better time as I am finally beginning to understand the root of my frustrations with living below my potential.

I'm going to use this book and create an A->B battle plan to get where I want to go.

I think this book can help someone not only find purpose in their life but also a way to live off that purpose and achieve ultimate freedom.

About the Author

Joel Meyerowitz (born 1938) is an award-winning photographer whose work has appeared in over 350 exhibitions in museums and galleries throughout the world. The New York native began photographing the streets in 1962 and by the mid-60s became an early advocate of color photography who was instrumental in transforming a general resistance to color film into an almost universal acceptance.

Editing, typography, design, image quality... poor.

This book is irritating to read. It seems that no one proofread or edited the text. The typography is bottom-notch. Hyphens are used as em dashes. Acute accents (or primes) with spacing issues are used in place of apostrophes. Quotation marks aren't contextual in multiple instances (they appear backwards). The line length is too long to be read with traditional pleasure, and it's Helvetica. The design of the book is pretty standard and generic. Why is black text used on pages 85 and 149? It doesn't read well or look nice. And the gray of page 85 looks cheap. What ever :-) These things were minor (initially).

Casually flipping through the pages, the images look pretty fine. But when I got to page 114, I could see the pixellation in the photo with the book in my lap (about a foot-and-a-half away from my eyes). I put the book up to my face and was amazed. I can't recall seeing film photographs reproduced so poorly in a serious photography book. From there I looked more closely at the image quality. Very noticeable pixellation is seen in the images on pages 144 and 145. Pixellation is especially noticeable in the high-contrast areas of images on pages 154, 155, 158, 168, 169, 177, 181 (wow — see the mechanic's arms), 183, 190, 191, and 193.

Most photos look fine at a distance (and on close inspection). And I originally didn't see the poor image quality on pages 32, 38, and 45. But this is a photography book — a self-proclaimed retrospective, at that — and I don't think above-average image quality is too lofty of an expectation.

I just noticed that "Massachus[e]tts" is misspelled on page 155. There are other instances of errors, though I'm not going to read through the text to find them again.

Any way.

This book makes me wonder if in addition to using rangefinders and large-format cameras, did Joel Meyerowitz also use a 2-megapixel digital camera. Yes, some images are reproduced that poorly. But, the pixellated photos are from all the decades covered in this retrospective. So of course, film photographs have simply been reproduced poorly. And I may have been more forgiving if the text and design showed much evidence of care. But no. It all seems hastily assembled. I am returning it.

I’m ashamed to say that after 20 years in New York I hadn’t heard of Joel Meyerowitz until I found this book. He is one of the founders of what we call “street photography,” long before it was fashionable. He was an employee of an advertising company, he saw Robert Frank’s photo book, The Americans, and figured he’d give it a try. Using a small camera, he started documenting the people on New York City streets, following that with a year in France and Spain, experiments with color and black and white photography, returns to New York City, and stays in Mexico.

This book is a retrospective, so you’re going to see a little of everything here. What fascinated me the most were his pictures of New York City in the 60’s, because I’m always keep to study the clothes and other norms of the time. Most of the people in his New York images look perfectly happy to be there, but then again, he wasn’t taking pictures in the Lower East Side, where things were lousy. I also noticed that almost all the photos contained no children, and that, I believe, is due to the old New York life. This city has always been popular with single adults, but it was never a good place to raise children. Until around 2000, once the families started growing, they’d move out to the suburbs. New York City kids always had a reputation of being spoiled. Meyerowitz’ photos include the World Trade Center Site, which I didn’t find that interesting. I would rather have seen more about the people working there, and I bet they’d have stories to tell. But his photos pf Mexico don’t get much attention here. I bet they show a lot of sleaze.

Street photography has gotten a lot of attention in the last decade. Brandon Stanton’s Humans of New York documents the improvised fashions of the city’s people, many of them children, so we can see how the average age of a New Yorker has changed. Jamal Shabaz’ A Time Before Crack documents the style of Black Americans in the city in the early 80’s, though he didn’t publish it until 2005. I suspect that someone out there has a pile of photos they took in the city, way back when it was rough, and it’ll become a bestseller.

A very informative and well written book.

This is the most complete book I've ever seen when it comes to the subject of evolution. The author writes with incredible detail and a mastery not often found when it comes to evolutionary biology.

A fascinatingly complete and accessible work

"Evolution" covers all of the possible topics with completion and accuracy. The work is made accessible to any reader through wide use of graphics to illustrate key concepts.The book is divided into four parts, each dealing with a different facet of evolutionary science: "The Organic Framework" concerns with the evolution of each of the five kingdoms of organisms; "The Psysical and Chemical Framework" focuses on the cellular level, dealing with the common chemical background and mechanisms of living creatures; "The Historical Framework" discusses the events leading up to Darwin's concept of evolution and further into our time; and, finally, "The Mechanisms", which reveals the workings of evolution on small-scale levels, such as gene frequencies and populations. Each of the book's chapters is further supported by an accompinying web site.

Useful for biology majors

Strickberger is famous in the genetical studies of Drosophila and his works primarily focus on phylogenetics and traditional genetic data interpretation.

In lieu of his speciality he has done a remarkable job composing this book as it makes a smooth, gradual transition from traditional evolutionary biology covering topics such as the endosymbiont theory, chemosynthetic origins of life, various theories of life and its formation to Linnean and Cladistic (anatomical and physiological classification) and finally into the real world with modern day molecular clock concepts and phylogenetic analysis.

Our focus in Biology 114 were all of these and the book was a fountain of knowledge in these regards. The field of study is generally boring, and I myself found this genre of biology to be more along the lines of some history class than a science subject.

On consideration of my negative bias of this whole topic, I still found this book to be remarkable. It had made a subject which I was not fond of (I didnt hate it but I didnt like it either) and made is refreshing. Strickberger's conversational style of writing and simplicity should by dually noted, the guy has a sense of humour what will make an individual crack up whilst reading his book. He is also highly informative and his explanations are not lost when reading as he joins ideas so coherently that it is hard to find gaps in the concepts he presents. This is by the way a book that ranges from explaining the history and philosophy of evolutionary biology, creationism vs evolution and how DNA fits in with respect to the three major biological domains.

The subject of Eukarya, Prokarya and Archia is discussed very well, a lot of focus is placed on the Eukaryotic paradigm of evolution since it is much more simpler to explain concepts with examples that an individual can associate with.

So unless you have a microbiology PhD or are microscopic yourself it is safe to say that Eukarya is most ideal :)

Strickberger has some philosophical differences to myself however I have learnt a significant amount from his text and found it useful in my further studies of Genetics at 200 (sophomore or second year) levels. How he explains electrophoresis is better than most analytical genetics textbooks, and this all packed in one cute package.

The bottom of the pages have this interesting lizard animation that when you flick the pages you see it move and eat a fly. I found that entertaining for the whole semester lol.
