Review

"...an immersion course in design, with a particularly in-depth look at collars...David doesn't tell you how to sew a shirt from start to finish; you can buy a pattern to do that. But if you start with a pattern and apply his design inspirations, you'll soon be a shirt geek, too." - American Sewing Guild Notions magazine

"The Shirtmaking Workbook by David Page Coffin (Creative Publishing international, 2015) is a 176-page guide to constructing distinctive men's and women's shirts, from classic workaday to runway-worthy options." - Threads magazine

"...in the online sewing world, sometimes it feels like there's a scarcity of books that aren't aimed at beginners, so it was really refreshing to find a book that...would be inspiring to newbies and advanced sewers alike (and super inspiring to shirt geeks like me)!" - Sonja of Gingermakes.com

What A Delightful Book- Been Designing for Years, But Good For Beginner's Too
By Colorgirl
I know that the title of this review might be off putting to some who would view this book, but let me explain. When I first began to sew and design clothing, I wanted to do it right. I didn't care about the shortcuts or the quickie solutions to just slipping by with creating clothing. I wanted to make high quality designer level fashions eventually. With this in mind, all of my sewing pursuits were based upon building one concept upon another and getting each one right as I went along until I learned a new one.

With this in mind, I recommend this for veteran sewers as well as beginners who want to learn how to do things right from the beginning. Yes it will take more time at first, but in the end, you will be glad you took the time to learn it correctly. HOWEVER IT IS NOT A HOW TO SEW BOOK. You will need other resources to compliment this one for basic sewing information.

WHAT IS THIS BOOK LIKE?
Author David Page Coffin breaks down the shirt types in terms of modular thinking. Each style has a particular look to the basic form of the shirt, which he calls blocks. Then there are sub blocks which mean that specific design shapes of shoulders, armscye, and center front and neckline, for example. The garment industry uses these blocks as generalized means of making a shirt to fit a wide variety of people. This book attempts to show you how to make your OWN PERSONAL block to fit YOU. These blocks are used to spin off of to make any type of shirt that you desire- adding details and interesting changes which reflect your personality.

This book has a large variety of photos of processes for things such as collars, plackets, cuffs, and anything that would apply to shirts. There are sections on specific styles of shirts with featured details laid out in progression. There are also designers featured in the book with examples of what they have done with shirts.

There are a lot of resources listed in the book, such as other books with good designing information in them so that you can build your own library of sewing reference- something that I have always found invaluable for my own sewing and designing pursuits.

He gives examples of each type of shirt block (think style here) and then places you can find these types of styles in patterns, books, and online.

The pages of the book are thick and durable (think good text book weight) and easy to read. The binding is not spiral and won't lay flat easily on a table unless weighted down.

HOW WOULD THIS CONTRIBUTE TO AN EXPERIENCED SEWER?
This book is an invaluable resource for any experienced sewer who wants to make high quality and good looking shirts that equal or excel beyond what is found in the general marketplace. The photos are well laid out, and the many tips in here offered will apply to many different types of patterns that you might develop or encounter. You can design your own shirts, or just use the many tips in the book to make excellent patterns from that are commercial patterns.

HOW WOULD THIS BOOK HELP A NOVICE SEWER?
This book might have some parts which are overwhelming for a novice sewer such as how to copy an existing shirt or perhaps designing, but if you are highly motivated as I was, it might be right up your alley. If you tend to be a bit more hesitant to try going out on your own, I would say that this book has enough in it to help you do one good thing for every pattern you try to sew. You can use a tip or two for your patterns and incorporate them into your daily sewing over time. When you are ready to do more, this book will provide it for you.

WHAT I LIKE
-lots of photos
-designer pages inspire greatly
-LOTS of references for more information
-breakdown of tips for all aspects of sewing
-diagrams helpful
-photo profiled garments, online patterns, and online articles are clearly marked in the text for easier reference

WHAT I DON'T LIKE
-flow of the book seems a bit jumbled -takes time to plow through it to find what I need
-spiral bound might make it easier to work with at the sewing table/machine

THE BOTTOM LINE
If you have ever wanted to make nice shirts of any kind, this book is an excellent resource to have. The information contained in the book is invaluable for improving sewing technique and making high quality durable clothing that looks designer. Even novices can use many tips in here until they find their grounding in the sewing world. Experienced sewers will find plenty in this book to keep them busy improving and learning and challenged. The designer cameos are very inspirational and encourage me to want to branch out into designing new things. All in all, although I wish it were spiral bound or bound so it stays open better, and the lay out of the book was a little less jumbled, this book is a huge winner! I highly recommend it to anyone who truly wants to sew and do it well.

This book will have a center place in my library for years to come. It is a jewel- not always easy to find these days. FIVE HUGE STARS !

ONLINE CONTENT
At the time of this review, I have not had a chance to work with the online content enough to evaluate it so I will update in the future as that opportunity presents itself to let you know about that aspect of the book as well.

No promised collar, cuff or placket patterns in book, only 20 (not more than 100) online
By Jacqueline Kiffe
Please note that I increased the number of stars from one to two based eon the author's statement that all links now work. I will go through the book and check online and revise my review further a bit later. One of the problems is that a second book and an assortment of web documents are all necessary to make sense of it, and they are not welI integrated. It should not require a juggling act to read it -- two books and a laptop.

I fully expected to adore this book, since I consider the original shirtmaking book (Shirtmaking: Developing Skills For Fine Sewing) one of the best sewing books ever written. I consider DPC to have had more influence on me than any other figure in sewing. I have been drafting my own patterns for decades, and the statement on the back cover ("Full-Size Patterns and Construction Steps for Practically Every Detail Imaginable!") sealed the deal for me, although it is a complete fiction. The promise on the front cover (More than 100 pattern downloads for collars, cuffs & plackets") is a complete lie, too. They may intend to do something in the future, but I would recommend waiting until they do, since by then quite a few people will have given up and resold their copies on Amazon.

There are no patterns in the book. Online, there are exactly 15 hyperlinks in the guide (five pointing to nothing), and most of them are worthless. There are seven nearly identical dress shirt collar patterns, an equestrian collar pattern, and 12 extremely similar detachable collar patterns, which I find astonishing. Thus, you get 20 collar pattern representing only two collar types, and zero plackets, zero cuffs, zero details. Of the aforementioned 15 links, 5 pointed to nothing, one just repeated pages in the book, one had basic instructions for a camp shirt collar (but no pattern), one just showed pictures of store-bought shirts in the author's collection, and one had ideas (but no patterns) for a single pocket and cuff (and if you need to be shown how to do a cuff that basic, then this book is too advanced for you). Just six had any patterns, and the range of those patterns went from A almost to B, but not quite. That is a far cry from what the cover promises.
Here is a list of the 15 links:
1. online copy of two pages in the book
2. basic camp collar instructions (no pattern)
3. 2 basic collar/stand patterns
4. 1 basic collar/stand pattern
5. 2 basic collar/stand patterns
6. sized equestrian collar
7. nonfunctional (broken) link
8. 12 detachable collar patterns
9. 2 dress collar patterns
10. nonfunctional (broken) link
11. nonfunctional (broken) link
12. nonfunctional (broken) link
13. photos of store-bought shirts the author owns
14. ideas (no patterns) for a pocket and a basic cuff
15. nonfunctional (broken) link

A new sewing classic
By karen viser
I would give this book 10 stars if I could. I preordered in December thinking I might pick up a few tips to transfer to women's blouses. When I received the book today I realized that I can spend years working my way through all the wonderful ideas and techniques. Not only is the book great, there is on-line access to patterns and tons of additional material. This is a "must have" for every sewing library.

The theory of the mechanisms of ego defense is covered along with a well written description of adolescent psychology and behavior. Includes case histories illustrating the use of these mechanisms in children. Anna Freud's style, reminiscent of her father's, makes this book appropriate for use as an introductory text.

A must-read timeless classic.
By Gonzalo A. Vazquez-Casals
A classic text, and a must read for any psychologist or psychotherapist, regardless of his/her theoretical persuasion. Anna Freud's book was the first attempt at organizing the different ways in which individuals try to cope with their internal drives and affects, with the people in their lives, and the external reality in general. This book had a tremendous influence in the mental health field from its publication, launching the field of ego psychology, and stimulating both theoretical and empirical work, which still resonates today. Though I was nurtured in a different school of thought in psychotherapy, I am able to appreciate the lucid writing of Anna Freud, who made every effort to make more accessible some of his father's concepts, and still leave her mark in the field. Contemporary psychoanalysis is still marching at the beat of Object Relations Theory, but the contribution of Anna Freud and Ego Psychology continues to be valuable when working with less compromised personality structures.

The Cross of Redemption: Uncollected Writings (Vintage International), by James Baldwin

The Cross of Redemption is a revelation by an American literary master: a gathering of essays, articles, polemics, reviews, and interviews that have never before appeared in book form.

James Baldwin was one of the most brilliant and provocative literary figures of the past century, renowned for his fierce engagement with issues haunting our common history. In The Cross of Redemption we have Baldwin discoursing on, among other subjects, the possibility of an African-American president and what it might mean; the hypocrisy of American religious fundamentalism; the black church in America; the trials and tribulations of black nationalism; anti-Semitism; the blues and boxing; Russian literary masters; and the role of the writer in our society.

Prophetic and bracing, The Cross of Redemption is a welcome and important addition to the works of a cosmopolitan and canonical American writer who still has much to teach us about race, democracy, and personal and national identity. As Michael Ondaatje has remarked, “If van Gogh was our nineteenth-century artist-saint, Baldwin [was] our twentieth-century one.”

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Baldwin's published essays have been already twice collected (The Price of the Ticket and the posthumous Library of America Collected Essays), but there are gems in this collection compiled by Kenan (Let the Dead Bury the Dead): "The Fight: Patterson vs. Liston" is as impeccably crafted as a short story; "Blacks and Jews" captures the speaking Baldwin and echoes the call-and-response tradition. The 54 pieces, none previously appearing in book form, range from Baldwin's first published book review in 1947 to a 1984 colloquy with college students. Baldwin's topic can often be subsumed under race, but he most consistently wrestles with questions of moral integrity--in the language ("The Uses of the Blues"), in the artist's work ("Why I Stopped Hating Shakespeare"), in the assessment of history ("On Being White... and Other Lies"), and in one's personal life ("To Crush a Serpent"). Kenan's introduction and headnotes are models of critical good sense; his awareness of both "Baldwin's achievements that beggar the imagination," and of the "grab bag" quality of some pieces makes him the perfect shepherd for these "lost" works.

From Booklist
Growing up poor, black, and gay in a household dominated by an abusive preacher stepfather, Baldwin gained perspective on every prejudice indulged by America in his lifetime—an epic saga from poverty and obscurity to comfort and world renown. This collection offers Baldwin’s previously uncollected essays, profiles, reviews, and letters, fully displaying the breadth of his struggle to come to terms with the injustice and, worse, the immorality of life in a nation that prided itself on equality. Baldwin is biting and insightful in his critique of religious fundamentalism, the prospects of a black president, the hypocrisy of the American art and cultural scene, the challenges of black nationalism, and the complexities of race and identity. In the long passages of his essays and the short, acerbic comments in his interviews, Baldwin shows a masterful sweep of language and ideas and feelings that continues to resonate. --Vanessa Bush

Review

“…anyone interested in engaging in candid albeit stakes-changing debate, anyone who had an investment in equity, humanity, and it’s future…gained tremendously from the variegated prism through which [Baldwin] viewed and translated the world. . . . These pieces, previously uncollected, not only give us a sense of the physical distances he traveled to ‘bear witness’ but also the intellectual latitude he stretched.” —Los Angeles Times

“Baldwin on race is Baldwin on the white American psyche. . . . The Cross of Redemption becomes an absorbing portrait of Baldwin’s time—and of him.” —New York Review of Books

“At a time when serious people claim we live in a ‘post-racial’ society, the reappearance of Baldwin’s writing—insistent, accusatory, outraged—feels like a terrible family secret coming to light in an Ibsen play, or Banquo’s ghost showing up to spoil the party. . . . It’s not easy to do what Baldwin did—not even for Baldwin. In fact, this volume unwittingly shows just how brutal the struggle could be.” —Newsweek

“…This book, which includes early fiction sketches that grew into Go Tell It On The Mountain and Giovanni’s Room was vibrant to the last, and his final products were a fitting, natural end to the long trajectory of his joyful misanthropy. . . . Baldwin’s essays are among the best in English since Orwell’s, and are freighted with the same weary skepticism, the same register of encomium and warning.” —Bookslut

“The Cross of Redemption amounts to an album of ‘studio tapes’ on which we hear songs we know in ways we’ve never heard before.” —Quarterly Conversation

“The concept of racial identity as a conscious choice had never occurred to me before I encountered it in Baldwin’s work. . . . Baldwin exposes the seamlessness of America’s racial past, present, and future.” —Timothy Ledwith, Open Letters Monthly

“These assorted essays, letters, reviews and profiles act as a reminder of the great power language has when used in the service of a talent like Baldwin’s. . . . Kenan has done us all a great service.” —Austinist

“This momentous collection of essays, book reviews, speeches, letters and journalism—and one short story—is a fierce and felicitous reminder of how towering a literary figure James Baldwin was.”—Outlook Columbus

“There are many gems here: Baldwin’s impassioned essays on music, his talks on anti-Semitism, and article about a boxing match. . . . These days, it can be difficult to find something as lasting as a Baldwin essay—as the kind of writing that gets under the skin and makes it itch.”—The Harvard Crimson

“Read this book to gain insight into James Baldwin, the World, and more importantly; Yourself!” —WAGTi Radio

“These previously published writings, gleaned for the most part from a variety of periodical sources, have a more powerful resonance when read together in book form. A useful addition for African American scholars.”—Library Journal

“…Offers a searing introduction to readers unfamiliar with his work and a welcome reminder to his fans of his sorcery with the English language. . . . Even at his most acerbic and skeptical, Baldwin clings to the ideas of hope and reconciliation in America.” —The Seattle Times

“The Cross of Redemption: Uncollected Writings, James Baldwin’s passionate hope for a better America, a United States that he can believe in and that believes in a brilliant black person, comes through in each piece of this disparate collection.” —South Florida Times

“…Brings the lights of day to many excellent pieces excluded from the Library of America’s ‘Collected Essays of James Baldwin’. . . . essential.” —SF Gate

“…While Baldwin was committed to pulling back the curtain on the forces he felt were manipulating America’s problems, he was also very serious about closing the gap between those in power and the disenfranchised. This new collection shows that he was willing to take on black, white, rich, or poor to see that happen.” —Christian Science Monitor

“The opportunity to further bask in Baldwin’s readably precise prose is a welcome gift. . . The Cross of Redemption shows why Baldwin should never be allowed to go out of fashion.” —Austin Chronicle

“Baldwin is biting and insightful in his critique of religious fundamentalism, the prospects of a black president, the hypocrisy of the American art and cultural scene, the challenges of black nationalism, and the complexities of race and identity. In the long passages of his essays and the short, acerbic comments in his interviews, Baldwin shows a masterful sweep of language and ideas and feelings that continues to resonate.” —Booklist

“Kenan’s introduction and headnotes are models of critical good sense; his awareness of both ‘Baldwin’s achievements that beggar the imagination’ and of the ‘grab bag’ quality of some pieces makes him the perfect shepherd for those ‘lost’ works.”—Publisher’s Weekly

“What you find here is a book that superbly reopens an unfinished life. In an age that people claim is ‘post-racial,’ the Baldwin’s-eye-view still seems to answer more questions than most other living writers. . . .[an] invaluable book of uncollected writings.”—Buffalo News

“His writing was diamond: sparkles, flashes and hard. The beginning of the collection, Baldwin states the purpose of his writing was to tell the truth. He succeeds. The Cross of Redemption is a remarkable collection.”—aalbc.com

“Baldwin’s Cross burns with rage, smoothly, like a cocktail mixed perfectly, Manhattan or Molotov.”—studio-walton muyumba

In Praise of James Baldwin

“Baldwin’s gift to our literary tradition is that rarest of treasures, a rhetoric of fiction and the essay that is, at once, Henry Jamesian and King Jamesian.”
—Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

“Baldwin’s way of seeing, his clarity, precision, and eloquence are unique . . . He manages to be concrete, particular . . . yet also transcendent, arching above the immediacy of an occasion or crisis. He speaks as great black gospel music speaks, through metaphor, parable, rhythm.”
—John Edgar Wideman

“Moralistic fervor, a high literary seriousness, the authority of the survivor, of the witness—these qualities made Baldwin unique.”
—The New York Review of Books

“The best essayist in this country—a man whose power has always been in his reasoned, biting sarcasm; his insistence on removing layer by layer the hardened skin with which Americans shield themselves from their country.”
—The New York Times Book Review

“He has not himself lost access to the sources of his being—which is what makes him read and awaited by perhaps a wider range of people than any other major American writer.”
—The Nation

“[Baldwin is] among the most penetrating and perceptive of American thinkers.”
—The New Republic

Soul on Fire
By Foster Corbin
Randall Kenan, author of LET THE DEAD BURY THEIR DEAD and A VISITATION OF SPIRITS, has edited the uncollected writing of James Baldwin for which we can all be grateful. The book is divided into Essays and Speeches, Profiles, Letters, Forewords and Afterwords, Book Reviews and Fiction. The writings cover 1947 when Baldwin was writing book reviews until the year of his death in 1987 when Baldwin was at the height of his powers in what is one of the best articles included here, "To Crush a Serpent."

No subject is off limits for Mr. Baldwin as he writes unflinchingly about white racism, Jews, black power, black English and religious fundamentalism. He has an open letter to Angela Davis and essays on Sidney Poitier and Lorraine Hansberry. Baldwin is a hard marker. In his review of the novel THE MOTH by James M. Cain-- probably most famous for THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE and DOUBLE INDEMNITY-- he says simply "Mr. Cain is no novelist: he has, indeed, his first sentence still to write; he has yet to achieve his first valid characterization." But it is Mr. Baldwin on the role of the Negro in America that he is sharpest and that he will probably be remembered for in a hundred years rather than his book reviews. I can think of no writer who has written better or with more passion on race in America than this great writer.

Time and time again Baldwin refers to what he calls "the nighmare of history" and laments that no one seems to learn from that history. In his essay "The Price May Be Too High," he opines that white people are beyond hope." And to persuade black boys and girls that their lives are less than other lives is "the sin against the Holy Ghost. He reminds us that slave labor made this country wealthy and that the American prison is filled with dark people. Baldwin does not mince words when it comes to white politicians, in particular Bobby Kennedy who could not understand why a black man would not want to take up arms to fight for this country. The Italian and other immigrants in this country spend their lives hating their parents, refusing to speak Italian in an effort to become American or upwardly mobile. Or as Baldwin says so eloquently, anyone making it in England did not get on the Mayflower. About fundamentalist religion, he says that the "Right Reverend Robertson" does not know the man from Galilee and that fundamentalists do not know that poor people exist. He sees white ministers and deputy sheriffs as one and the same. Finally Baldwin laments that President Eisenhower's favorite writer is Zane Grey. (He believes, by the way, that Henry James is America's greatest novelist.)

But for all of Baldwin's jeremiads, he hopes in the essay "Black Power" that "something will happen in the human heart that will change our common history." But if that something doesn't happen, then black people should remember that they come from a long line of runaway slaves "who survived without passports."

Although Mr. Baldwin has been dead almost 25 years, one wonders what he would think about our first black president. (He asked in one of his essays the question: why would a black man want to be president?) I fear that he would find many things the way he left them. Although integration may have come to the White House, sad to say, ours is still a segregated country where children in black and Latino neighborhoods often go to inferior schools and-- to paraphrase another fine writer of color-- too often find their dreams of a better life deferred.

He who has not read Mr. Baldwin has not read anglophone America
By Love Thy Enemy
Yet to begin with this book is like buying a collection of Jimi Hendrix studio out takes and concert bootlegs and claiming to have heard and to know his oeuvre.

Begin, rather, with Go Tell It on the Mountain and work forward through the novels, all of them.

And the political analysrs intended for publication.

Read then, only then, and just as carefully, this rich banquest of leftovers, from one of our deepest thinkers and most gifted literary stylists in American English.

And come to know our America, backwards and forwards, inside and out.

For context read as well the complete works of Richard Wright, such as Richard Wright : Later Works: Black Boy (American Hunger), The Outsider, and the great work of Ralph Ellison, the greatest anglo American novel, Invisible Man. His next novel tragically was lost in a mysterious house fire and never completely resurrected.

They simply do not teach this stuff in our schools anymore, as we must.

Know our history. Read these great works of American writing.

Not all "uncollected" or even "written" but Baldwin shines
By Francis A
It's always a great pleasure to return to Baldwin's unmatched prose. The first thing you ask of a writer is that he can write (a question too rarely answered in the affirmative), and Baldwin used the English language as well as anyone has done.

This brings me to the first of a few quibbles about the book. A few of the longer pieces are not in fact "written", or at least not written in the form presented here. I don't know the extent to which Baldwin wrote a script for his speeches, but he clearly didn't stick to it. And he certainly didn't write the words he spoke in debates and discussions. A couple of the longer pieces fall into this "unwritten" category. And while the pieces may never have been collected together in one volume, many have certainly been collected somewhere, as half were familiar to me and only one of those from its original source.

The more significant problem is that while some of the writing in here is as good as anything Baldwin has written, a lot of it is relatively casual (insofar as Baldwin's writing was ever casual) and ephemeral stuff. In passing we learn how much effort and care went into "Another Country" and the "Down at the Cross" (the major part of "The Fire Next Time"), and you wonder what Baldwin would have thought of a rather random collection of pieces like this one. It would certainly be a shame to begin your knowledge of Baldwin with this book.

But there is more than enough great writing, passion and (over four traumatic decades) consistent bravery of thought and analysis to savour and encourage you to revisit the best of his writing.

Now, It's the Best Out There and Mandatory
By Rocco Dormarunno
I have taught introductory writing and literature courses for decades now. "Literature and the Writing Process", through its many incarnations, has always been a very good textbook. I was expecting the same calibre when I heard a 9th edition was coming out. When I received my instructor's copy, however, I was pleasantly surprised by the several updates. My one complaint about the book previously was that I felt that McMahan, et al. should lighten it up. What I mean by that was that the book, like others, was fairly humorless. With the new section on satire, parody and light verse, I have been relieved of the duty of photocopying samples of this style and genre. I am even considering using this as a supplemental text for my Humor and Literature class. Good work, guys!

I was surprised and pleased to learn that there was so much packed into this book! Complete poems, short stories, plays, and lots of short biographies about the writers of the works within the book. My only complaint is that the text is very small and sometimes hard to read.
