Emotionally Shredding

I think most people here have already summed up this book, and there is little I can add to what they've said. I'll try anyway.
On the Beach tells the story of the aftermath of an all-out nuclear war. The setting is Australia, one of the few places in the world to escape not only the bombs, put the deadly clouds of radioactive fallout from the war. But they'll only survive for a little while, because the global wind currents are slowly pushing the deadly fallout down to Antarctica. The Aussies only have a short time before they all come down with radiation sickness and die. The whole book is an emotional rollercoaster as the dreaded day of death looms ever closer, with absolutely nothing to prevent doom. Most people are resigned to their fate, and try and stay busy with various daily rituals in an effort to keep their sanity.
The two main characters of the book are Dwight Towers, a U.S. submarine commander who has survived the war and is in refuge in Australia, and Moira Davidson, a young Australian girl who is bitter about her fate and seeks consolation with Dwight. Other characters are introduced, such as a young couple with a baby and a scientist who likes racing cars. The reader is quickly drawn into these people's lives, and really comes to care about what happens to them. Needless to say, the ending isn't warm and cheery. I had to stop reading the book several times and take a little break to get rid of the huge lump in my throat. It is a VERY tough read at the end. If you don't get emotional, you just might be dead.
There are several small points to make about the book. The author, Nevil Shute, isn't exactly the best writer in terms of grammar. There are awkward sentences and errors, and it sometimes detracts from the story. He also wrote this book in the late 1950's, and he's English, so there are words that don't make much sense today. Despite these flaws, the story is still gut wrenching and compelling. I really appreciated Shute's sense of irony. Moira first meets Dwight because she is enlisted to keep his mind off of his dead family in America. However, Moira ends up being the one who starts to break down. More irony appears when people make plans that they know they won't be alive to keep. The scene when Peter and Mary are planning their garden is is a good example of this irony, and you'll groan in anguish over it. Overall, I haven't been this upset over something since I watched the film "Cutting Moments".
I'm surprised more people haven't heard of this book. I gave it to my Mom to read first, and she bawled like a baby at the end. You may not bawl, but you'll certainly be affected.

"On the Beach" is one of those books that you read for the concept and the story, but not for the quality of the writing. The plot centers around the lives of a few remaining survivors of a nuclear war who live in Australia. Since the was has taken place in the northern hemisphere, Australia has largely escaped unscathed--for the moment. But as prevailing winds approach Australia, they carry lethal doses of radiation with them. The implication of this is that all of the characters in the book--in fact everyone in the world--will inevitably be extinguished.
"On the Beach" has a profound psychological impact because it is devoid of the intense action that usually accompanies nuclear apocolypse films. The destruction has already occurred elsewhere and the citizens of Australia are largely going about their business knowing they will soon die. The fact that their infrastructure has not been destroyed and that all of their social aparatus is still intact makes their fate all the more sad and earie.
Although this book is set in the Cold War it's outcome is still relevant and feasible today. The nuclear warheads generated by the arms race haven't gone away. The former Soviet Union is a desparate, chaotic place, and as several reviewers pointed out, more small countries are joining the nuclear club. One could say that Nuclear madness has merely transformed itself, but its danger certainly hasn't disappeared.
I think everyone should read this book to be reminded of the possible future we all face.

Wonderful book--Nevil Shute's most famous if not his best

After a nuclear war, radiation slowly drifts southwards, gradually killing off humanity there as it has already been killed off in the Northern Hemisphere. The end is less than a year away, yet Australians, and a few American naval refugees seek to maintain their daily lives in the face of doom, and even send an exploratory submarine northwards.
The fascination of the book is watching how people react to the inevitable doom. Many just go on plegmatically, a few pretend it will never happen. Most interesting is Moira Dawson, an Australian girl who had dreamed of visiting London and Paris, and now never will, and who seeks to live what little life is left to the fullest. She learns a lesson from a stillborn romance with Dwight Towers, the submarine commander who acts as if his wife and children are alive in Connecticut.
Perhaps the limitation of this book is that most of the characters simply accept their doom, presumably having come to terms with it before the start of the book. But more of a range of viewpoints might be welcome. Could you imagine the anger and frustration of teenagers under these circumstances, in the throes of adolescence without the promise of adulthood, knowing they will never have their independence.
As in most of Shute's later works, there are no villians. That is welcome when so many books have paper villains for us to vicariously hate.

Great drumset book for young drummers!

My wife teaches drumset to all ages and loves this book for young students. It has cool pictures that students like and touches the basics of rock, jazz, and blues. It also has sample drum fills the students can play. A CD is also included. Her only complaint is that it might move a little too fast for very young students due to the fact that it only spends one lesson on quarter note beats and then jumps into eighth notes. Highly recommended.

Best QB book...period

I have a son that is a college freshman quarterback and I have researched about every book and training aid there is. This is the best....the key to this book is all the information that the qb doesn't get from most coaches and parents (if he would even listen.) Coach Shea uses examples of famous former students of his that will hit home with your QB. Much information about work ethic, mental toughness, personal skills, etc...traits that will last them their entire life. The book is expensive, hardcover with great pictures, but worth it. Less than a half hour qb lesson and a much greater value. The skills, traits, actions that Coach Shea talks about in Eye's Up could be the difference in your qb's career. I am finishing reading today and overnighting to my son. Wish I would have had this many years ago.

THE RIP-OFF - "They" Don't Want You To Know About

One of the biggest wastes of money that I have seen in a long while. The infomercial makes it seem as though the reader will be given direct information about specific grants and programs for "free money." Instead there is nothing more than a few websites named - all of which I have seen in the past. Shame, shame, shame on me - there IS NO SUCH THING as "Free Money." I do, however wish I had my $16.59 back for this useless book. Redundant, poorly written, and waaaaaaaaaaay too hyped.

I seen the infomercial and was really exited but the book turned out to be more of the commercial. In the book, he told a lot about society and joked around but there wasn't a lot of real information on how to get money. A lot of facts with a small amount of useful information. A few web addresses or phone numbers scattered here or there. The first bit of info, a web address, wasn't until page 27...

A lot of common since things too. When you need money, of COURSE you are going to check old savings bonds, you would probably NEVER forget money in an 'old' bank account and taxes season is one of the biggest events of the year. SOMEBODY is going to ask you if you filed your taxes yet, so it's kind of hard to forget about tax money.

Also, everybody already knows about the Pell Grant and everybody knows about buying foreclosure houses for next to nothing, fixing them up and then selling them for a profit. Everybody knows about eBay and everybody knows about craigslist. Of COURSE you would sell your car if you really needed the money and people sell their various collections every day. That is what Pawn Stars is all about...

Simply not enough information. Free money they don't want you to know about? Seems like Kevin doesn't want us to know about it either. LOL.

Don't Get Ripped Off!!!!!!!

I usually don't write reviews but I felt that I had to warn people about Kevin Trudeau and his book. My dad surprised me and bought me this book along with Debt Cures hoping I could find some extra money for college. At the time I thought I had heard of Kevin Trudeau and I did some research on him and found out that he is just another con artist. I still read the books and I wasn't surprised at finding that I had wasted my time. If you are contemplating on whether or not to buy this book, you are just wasting your time doing that! DON'T BUY IT! He says that he is going to tell you where and how to get free money, but instead he gives you information you can find on the internet for free. The only reason this book is 245 pages is because he continually repeats himself. If you don't trust the negative reviews that you are reading about this book then I recommend that you buy this book off of Ebay. I found a seller on there that is selling this book and Debt Cures together as an ebook and is only $.99. So if you don't want to lose any money while trying to make money, I suggest that you don't buy this trash.

Very interesting and informative.

If you like history I think you will love this book. I mean, how many of us know much at all about the US-Mexican war and that time period in US history? The fact that much of the southwestern US was once part of Mexico and that Texas was an independent country for about nine years is not generally known. In Mexican history General Santa Anna is highly regarded and considered the hero of the Alamo battle. However in Mr Reeder's view he is a coward and a scoundrel. Red Reeder's books are written at a "young reader" level and I would say they are aimed at a 9th or 10th grade reader. Even so, adults will find the story very interesting. It held my attention cover to cover. I'm looking forward to reading more of Mr. Reeder's books and I highly recommemd this one.

A bit intrigue, kidnap, and emotion wound tightly into a finely wrought novel.

I haven't read much of author Wendy Vella's work but I truly enjoyed this book. I am a fan of Recency romances but the vast majority of these are situated in London during the Season. Some are in the country. But all are in parlors, ballrooms, and during fancy dinners. This novel confronts the other parts not commonly even talked about in polite society.

Charlotte Radley is the daughter of a Duke and his Mistress. Viscount Needly is in charge of his family and tends to over-manage all. He protects what is his. He is also a member of the Lord's of Night Street, a group of Lords who investigate cases that police don't have time or jurisdiction over. Cases where discretion is required.

Charlotte approaches Lord Needly, known as Lord Valiant of the Night Street gentlemen. She tries to help prostitutes, to escape their lot in life, or just help them with their needs daily. Several prostitutes have disappeared. Charlotte needs help finding out what is happening and save the missing women.

While sparks fly, we find out how the 'other half' lives.

Wendy wove a story with strands of love, kidnap, action, and HEA. I highly recommend it. I'm off to purchase the first volume in the Series.

A wonderful story with a fast moving plot

The second book in the Lords of Night Street series is outstanding. I am a big fan of Wendy's books. This story is about Charlotte the bastard daughter of a duke and his mistress. She escapes the duke's household where she is constantly punished because of her birth, and goes to London and sets up a house to help prostitues get off the street. Unfortunately she makes enemies that want her dead and has no choice but to apply to the Lords of Night Street for help. Marcus, Viscount Needly agrees to help her and soon realizes that she is a brave strong woman that has no fear for herself and is determied to help these womam no matter the cost. She frustrates him, but at the same time he finds himself attracted to her for her strength, determination and intergity. They are both strong willed and determined to make the other see it their way. A wonderful story with a fast moving plot, a beautiful love story and lots of peril to keep you turning the pages. Would recommend this book to anyone who loves a great romance.

A Stellar Regency Romance

After reading her first Regency romance, I fast became a fan of Wendy Vella's. I'm always eager to read her latest offering. Lord Valiant has only strengthened my love of her work. This is the story of how Marcus, Viscount Needly finds the woman who will claim his heart. Miss Charlotte Radley is a woman well use to the uglier side of mankind. Not simply because of her upbringing, though it dealt its own blows, but because she has devoted her life to prostitutes and and a few servants who have been abused by their betters.

I think this is the shortest of Ms. Vella's works that I've read. It took me under two hours to finish. However, it includes enough back story, character detail and textures (she does a nice job of describing fabrics that give the perfect visual) to provide a well-written and captivating romance.

It's a quick read, but an excellent one and well suited for a cozy afternoon in bed or one spent lounging by the pool.

His skematic view about selfesteem and organizational outcomes relationship is inspirational and didactic. The three dimensional model -inclusion, control and openess- explains the main human relationships. About the Author
Marianne M. Jennings, J.D., Emeritus Professor of Legal and Ethical Studies, has taught at the WP Carey School of Business, Arizona State University since 1977. She was named professor of the year in the College of Business in 1981, 1987, 2000, and 2010. She served as director of the Joan and David Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics at ASU from 1995-1999. Ms. Jennings has written six textbooks and four monographs in the areas of business ethics, ethical culture, and legal environment. She was director of the Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics from 1995 to 1999. Ms. Jennings has worked with government agencies, professional organizations, colleges and universities, and Fortune 100 companies on ethics training and culture. She is a contributing editor of the Accounting and Compliance Alert and the Real Estate Law Journal. Two of her books have been named Library Journal's book of the year. Her books have been translated into three languages. Her book, The Seven Signs of Ethical Collapse, published by St Martin's Press, has been used as an audit tool and a primer by numerous organizations for creating and sustaining an ethical culture. In 2011, Ms. Jennings was named one of the Top 100 Thought Leaders by Trust Across America and in 2012, she was named one of the 100 most influential people in business ethics by Ethisphere magazine. Ms. Jennings served on the board of directors for Arizona Public Service (now Pinnacle West) who owned the Palo Verde Nuclear Station from 1987 through 2000. She has served on INPO's advisory council since 2005. In 2015, she was named an affiliated scholar with the Center for the Study of Economic Liberty at Arizona State University. She conducts ethics training and ethical culture assessments for businesses, including Fortune 100 companies, government agencies, professional associations, and nonprofit organizations.

Do not rent. Classic bait and switch. Pictured is the10th ed., the Isbn for the 10th ed. will pull this into your queue. However, what arrives on your door step is a big stinking pile of the 9th ed.
